Dear Mary:
I doubt I can help...as I don't know where, in Ireland, our Cavanaghs were
from. The five Cavanagh children emigrated Ireland about 1837 when their mother died and
were raised by the Bell family in New York (a sister to their mother). We had a Charles
who, I'm told, ran away on a ship when he was old enough to leave home. Did he return
to Ireland? Don't know. He and all the children were unhappy when Auntie Bell wanted
them all to become priests and nuns....and they all left Auntie Bell. My
great-grandfather, John Cavanagh. b.1836 married Auntie Bells lady's maid and became a
N.Y. fireman! I only know the names of 3 of the 5 children. John, Charles, Catherine.
I don't know which clan we belong to either as we don't know their town in
Ireland.
I would suggest to you to join the Cavanagh DNA Project, if you have a male Cavanaugh
who would donate his DNA. That may be the only route for you to find your clan. You can
find the DNA group at
www.familytreedna.com
I wish you good luck in your search.
Kathryn E. Norman
