Mary:
Sorry to say that I haven't done a lot on the Cavanaghs, who are my mother's
maternal line. I've been concentrating on my father's family (Norman).
I have a few things to add:
I made a mistake on John Cavanagh's birthdate. He was born in 1852..and emigrated in
1855, at 3 years old. His mother was Scottish, but his father (Cavanagh) was born in
Ireland. John was born in Scotland...(perhaps his mother returned to her family in
Scotland for the birth.) I had understood from my mother that the 5 siblings emigrated
from Ireland. I have no idea what happened to their father. My great-grandparents had
seven children of their own. They had only one male who was named Charles....so his father
may have been Charles Cavanagh. Charles seemed to have been a popular name in the family.
John's brother was Charles...then he named his son after either his brother or father.
Then my mother named my brother Charles after Charles Cavanagh.John's son.
Name patterns seemed to be important for the Irish, so I'm listing the given names
of John & Ellen Cavanagh's children The children may have been named for the
siblings of John & Charles.
The given names are: Charles, Catherine, Margaret,Ellen (the mother's given name)
Anastasia, Maddeline, Grace.
So when you're searching through census's it's good to be familiar with the
given names of a possible sibling.
I wish I could be more helpful. I tried to search the census's in New York where the
Bell's (who raised the siblings) lived. I know that the name of the head of the house
was Charles Bell. The Bells had no children of their own. I will possibly find out more.
I'm trying to find the Will & death certificate of Auntie Bell to see the maiden
name of her sister (the children's mother.) If you send me your e-mail address,
I'll let you know if I find out more information.
Kathryn
