My maternal great-grandfather, John Cavanagh b.1853, Scotland, immigrated with four
siblings from Ireland when their mother passed on. I only know 3 of the siblings
names...John, Catherine, Charles. They were taken in by their mothers sister, or aunt,
Grace Bell and her husband Charles Bell of New York City. They were a colourful group...my
great-grandfather, John became a fireman in New York, and ran away with Auntie Bells'
"ladies maid" and married her (my great-grandmother)....Catherine ran away and
married an actor and died young in poverty (though the Bells were wealthy)...and Charles
ran away on a ship never to be heard of again, (where he ended up no one knows.) I
don't know what happened to the other 2 siblings. It seems that Auntie Bell wanted
them all to be nuns and priests....that was enough to make them disappear! The only one to
get in her good graces again was my great-grandfather, John Cavanagh...who ended up
receiving a "gentlemans farm" in Wortendyke, N!
.J.from
her for a belated wedding gift. He was murdered many years later in a robbery.
Though John was born in Scotland.....the Cavanaghs were Irish ...at least that's what
my mother told me.
If this is familiar to anyone I'd like to hear from you. I'd be interested to
find the "lost" descendants of these siblings if there are any.
Peace!
Kathryn E. Norman

I just read your post about you wanting information about the Cavanagh name. If
you still interested, please feel free to write me at brighteyesnal1(a)yahoo.com
My last name also came from the name Kavanagh, also spelt Cavamagh. But, there
are also many other spellings as well. as these two. Mine just so happens to be
Keevan. I have a scroll with the different spellings, you wouldn't beleive it.
Look forward to hearing from anyone that is looking for any of the Kavanagh's
from Mass. area. I myself am looking for my great, great, grandfather that first
came over from Ireland, in the mid 1800's. If anyone has any information,
regarding any Kavanagh's during that period of time. please let me know
