Dear Helene,
I just saw your post for Wanza Zech on the Cauthen Message Board. I haven't seen a
posting by Wanza since about 2000 so I don't think she's on the internet any
longer. Since I'm related to the Cauthens in the Madison County area (my Ggrandmother
is Nancy Missouri Cauthen who was married to Thomas W. Beckham), I can help with the
genealogy. At one time there was a copy of "The Cauthen Family History" by
Maryline Cauthen Westenhaver in the Canton Public Library. It is considered the foremost
authority on the Cauthen family. If it's no longer there, please contact me. My
e-mail address is beckhamhf(a)yahoo.com
Your other question was regarding a plantation. This would be Kirkwood Plantation which
was located between Camden, MS and Thomastown, MS (the mansion burned about 1937).
However, the Cauthens did not own it, William McWillie did. McWillie who came from
Lancaster County, SC with Milton, was a US Congressman in 1849 and Governor of Mississippi
in 1857. Milton Cauthen was McWillie's Overseer and Agent who ran the plantation when
McWillie was absent. Milton Cauthen owned 520 acres or more land that he farmed adjacent
to Kirkwood which he deeded to his sons and son-in-law after the Civil War (Oct. 1865).
As of 1970's that land was still in the family.
Hope this helps and am eager to hear from you.
Frank Beckham
