I would suggest two avenues of research. Firstly talk to all your Causton
relatives and see what they can tell you, even if it is not exact. That
information is free! Secondly use the abstract of the birth marriage and
death GRO indexes on my web site at
http://www.btinternet.com/~john.causton
to take an informed guess at your fathers birth (e.g. 1921 Hammersmith) and
grandfathers marriage (1921 Lewisham to a ----Hawkins). Because your
fathers name is so unusual the 1921 Hammersmith birth is very likely to be
1921 in Lewisham but you cannot be sure without ordering the birth
certificate. There are other children of a mother with a maiden name of
Hawkins born in Hammersmith who are likely to be brothers and sisters of
your father. These are Harold W (1916), William R (1919), Stanley C (1923),
and Frances V F (1928). Ordering these certificates will confirm whether
these are uncles and aunts - if you do not already know! By locating their
marriages we can probably trace their children- your cousins. There is
value in doing this as they may have already traced the family tree, have
interesting photos or family bibles. They may also be people you want to
contact anyway.
You can get the certificates yourself by going to the Family Records Centre
in London (1 Myddelton Street, London EC1R 1UW - tel 020 7533 6436).
Alternatively you can use an agent, who adds a small extra charge for each
certificate- but for most people still much cheaper than a visit to the
centre. Or I can do it for you - I use an agent and merely pass on the
agents charge. I do not make anything on this dael (this is my hobby) but
this gives me the advantage of seeing the certificates. The cost of getting
all the certificates above would be £55 from me. Let me know if you want to
persue this.
Once back a generation or two we can start using the census data, especially
the indexed 1881 census. Using certificates and the census records it is
usually possible to get back to 1800. Prior to this you are largely reliant
on church records having survived.
best wishes
John Causton
