Thanks for your informative reply Ed! Her name was never recorded as Saussey since no
records exist for her prior to her marriage. She appears as Elizabeth Avery or Avera on
all known documentation. The spelling of "Saussey" occurred when her
great-nephew (born 1874) wrote down the oral history passed down from his grandparents,
which he didn't undertake until about 1931. I believe he was spelling Causey
phonetically.
The Courseys we are related to by DNA also trace their origins back to a progenitor named
William who originated or resided in South Carolina. I guess what I would like to find out
is if William Causey of Amite and William Coursey who "disappeared" from South
Carolina records circa 1794 is the same man.
I have been looking at William Coursey Jr. of Amite, MS and his wife Susannah Whittington
as the most likely parents of my Elizabeth. Susannah's father's name was
Cornelius, possibly explaining how Elizabeth's great-nephew came by the name. There
are also quite a few Whittington's in Washington County in the 1820's when
Elizabeth married James Avera. It's only a theory at the moment... Frustrating to try
piecing things together without documentation.
If anyone is a direct maternal descendent of any of the Causey/Coursey wives and has done
(or wants to do) mitochondrial DNA testing, please get in touch with me. We've done
the full mtDNA sequencing for my grandfather so a close match with another direct-line
descendant would prove/disprove relationships as well.
