It might be revealing to see the originally written 'Saussey' and confirm that it
really begins with an 'S'. Ornate hand-written characters are sometimes mis-read.
My own records show a number of 'Csussey' relations whose use of the double
's' reflect a relatively poor educational level of some Causey descendants. Never
the less, the double 's' stuck and is still used today. Lamar Cossey is also a
descendant and he uses the 'Cossey' spelling.
I have no Avera or Avery in my Causey records. William Causey Jr. of Amite, MS is a true
son of William Causey 1744-1828 and married Susanna Whittington in 1809 in Mississippi;
five years after the Causeys moved to Mississippi. The Causeys, Whittingtons, and Jacksons
were all members of the same church and all arrived in Amite Co., MS at about the same
time. The fathers of these families served in the South Carolina militias and knew each
other. The families apparently all decided to move to Mississippi at the same time, and
for the same reason....free land. They lived adjacent to each other and their children
intermarried. Amite County citizenry still has representatives of all three families.
Records show William left South Carolina in 1804 and was on the 1805 tax roll in
Mississippi. William Jr. and Susanna did not have a child named Elizabeth.
