I have had the Y-DNA, MtDNA and Family Finder test done with Family Tree DNA
in Houston, Texas. My Y-DNA is a match with Causey, Baggett, Means & Newton.
Baggett is a match about 1850, Newton is a match about 12 to 15 generations
back and Causey and Means are a match about 20 to 22 generations back (1464
- 1560). My Causey match is with the William Causey, a revolutionary soldier
that was granted land in Amite Co., MS in early 1800. He established a
plantation in prior to 1810 and is listed in the 1810 census of that county.
The Causey surname first shows up at Jamestown in 1607 when Nathaniel
Causey, a Gentleman Planter, arrived with the Virginia Colony. He eventually
was granted land and established Causey Care. An excellent source for all
these folks is "Adventurers of Purse and Person, Virginia 1607-1624/25"
fourth edition. I think you can still purchase it on Amazon for about $90
per volume, one of three.
Avera and Avery only show up in my Family Finder test which indicates they
are a cousin up to about the 6th level and could come from either my mother
or father's side. My mother's side is most likely because all her ancestors
have been in Georgia and southeast area since the 1700's as Cherokee
Indians. In fact, I was born in Jesup, Georgia in 1944. I do have a Coursey
or two that married into the family way back. That's one line I haven't
pursued.

I've seen a lot of posts on here regarding tests done by people with the
surname Causey & Cossey. My ancestor's name was Elizabeth Saussey of
Washington County, GA born about 1805 and we believe "Saussey" was a
phonetic version of Causey (we have ZERO DNA matches to anyone with the
surname Saussey in their tree.) The most likely candidate to be her sibling
is Alfred Cosey of Washington County, born circa 1796. He spelled his last
name Causey, Cosey, Cossey, Corssey and Coursey. I guess the guy couldn't
make up his mind!
There is a Coursey DNA project on FTDNA with no Causey's listed on the
patriarch's page. There is a Causey DNA project with ZERO participants and
the admin email is empty. So.... where are all the Causey's? Was Coursey a
variant? Elizabeth and her husband, James Avera Jr., ended up in Crawford
County. One of their daughters went to Alabama, another to Mississippi and a
third to Caddo, Arkansas for a short time. There are Causey and Coursey
families in all of those locations.
We match a descendant of James Coursey of Swainsboro, Emmanuel, GA who named
his son William. There was a William Coursey who was awarded a land grant in
Washington County, GA in 1797, but the courthouse in Sandersville burned
during the Civil War so there are no marriage or probate records. DNA is all
we've got folks... so where are all the Causey's at? This is a
crazy-confusing family!! Sounds like I fit right in. ;-)
