Understanding why you are a bit confused, I will explain as best as I know of from family
lore told to me.
My Great Grandmother, Mary Jane Causey, was born Aug. 1850 in Chambers Co., AL. and said
born out of wedlock to Martha Causey and a Cherokee Indian. I've attempted for many
years to find any real proof of this without any success. However, all of my older
relatives, now many deceased, were absolutely sure it was true. Also, looking at the
mid-size picture I have of her, it does appear she could have been half American Indian.
True or not, she was a fine woman and good to her husband and their children. Her
husband, my Great Grandfather, Jeremiah Prather Sims, died 3 Feb. 1891 at Simcoe, Cullman
County, Alabama leaving her with small children and little or no money at all. She lost
the farm to unpaid taxes and moved to near Newburg, Franklin Co., AL. where she struggled
to provide the bare necessities for herself and the children.
She had to have been a very good woman and mother to not just give up and run away. She
died at home near Phil Campbell, Franklin County, Alabama on 22 January 1921 and is buried
in a marked grave "Mary Causey Sims 1850-1921" in the Phil Campbell City
Cemetery at Phil Campbell, Franklin County, Alabama.
Now you know about as I do and can understand why my Great Grandmother, Mary Jane (Cauaey)
Sims, had the same Causey name an her mother, Martha Causey.
