Sorry about the tardiest report to date -- we've been so busy that
we just didn't have the time to compile our statistics for October
and November.
The executive summary is that we had about a 55% growth over in
just the three months from September to December:
o 20,835,802 Web files (14,687,507 in Sept) from 2,240
Websites (1,891 in Sept).
- 5,903,137 were HTML pages (not images or cgi-bin)
(4,462,656 in Sept).
- 2,911,509 were cgi-bin database searches and such.
(1,777,881 in Sept).
- 11,849,905 were GIFs (10,902,627) or JPEGs (947,279)
(8,317,545 in Sept were GIFs (7,560,589) or JPEGs
(756,956).
o 472,838 FTP file downloads from the USGenWeb Archives
and the ROOTS-L Library (427,565 in Sept).
o We've lost count of how much mail we're shipping to
the 2,300+ (1,900 in Sept) mailing lists we host, but
last month it was in the neighborhood of 90,000,000
million pieces.
o 60,000 alt.g and s.g.* Usenet News articles
to hosts on three continents (same as Sept).
o Approximately 321,408,000,000 bytes in total
(207,360,000,000 in Sept).
Besides adding hundreds of new Websites and mailing lists, in
the last three months RootsWeb has added search engines for
the USGenWeb Archives and all 4 *gigabytes* of messages in
the archives of our surname and regional mailing lists.
Also in the last three months, RootsWeb has added several new
servers and a third and fourth T1 connection to the Internet.
(A T1 is about 50 times faster than a standard modem.) These
additions have significantly increased our costs of operation,
but they were essential if we were to continue to properly
support the Internet genealogical community.
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank RootsWeb's Members,
Sponsors, and Donors.
*** RootsWeb could not exist without you ***
Because you've chosen to support RootsWeb, we already have more
than 7 gigabytes (that's the eqivalent of 3.5 *million* pages)
of genealogical data online.
There is a tremendous amount of further work to be done but, if
community support of RootsWeb continues to grow, ultimately we
will be able to provide resources to online genealogists that
will rival what they could find in the very best research
libraries. We've done a lot already, but think of what it will
be like when any genealogist can access a first-rate library
from the comfort of their own home.
Thanks again for your support! -B
