Mr. Carel A Cosby, Jr., age 66, of 4300 Randall Drive, Hamilton, died
Friday, March
21, 1997 at 11:17 p.m. at his residence.He was born in Hamilton, the son of
Carel, Sr. and Verlie (Beck) Cosby. He was educated in Liberty Township
School, a 1948 graduate of Monroe High School. He earned his B.S. degree
in education from Miami University in 1952 and his M.E. degree in 1953. He
was a member of PEK and Sigma Alpha Eplison honary fraternities.
He was a part-time plasterer from the age of 13 until 31. He was a teacher
and coach from 1952-1958 at Dixon High School and Mayfield Jr. High School.
He became Assistant Principal of Monroe Elementary School in 1958;
Principal of Sherman Elementary School in 1959 and Principal of Oneida
Elementary in 1962, where he remained until is death.
He was a badketball official for 40 ye4ars. He refereed in the Big Ten for
13 years, Mid-American Conference for 19 years, OVC for 15 years, Metro
Seven for 6 years, Indiana Conference for 17 years, Hoosier Buckeye for 7
years, Ohio Athletic 11 years and Mid-Ohio for 12 years. He supervised
Officials of the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Assn. From 1983-1987
and supervised Officials of the Mid-Ohio Conference from 1985-1987. He was
currently an observer of Officials for the USA Conference. He had refereed
NCAA College Regional, Division II, Division III games from 1967 until
1981. He had worked the finals in 1976, 1979 and 1981. He worked the NIT
Tournament in 1976, the Ohio Indiana Collegiate All Star Game in 1973 and
the Kentucky-Indiana All Star Game in 1976. He referreed Ohio High School
Regional and State Tournament games from 1963 until 1974. He was a
baseball umpire for 24 years, working in the Big Ten, Mid-American, AABC,
SW Umpires Associations. Also the Mid-American NCAA playoffs, Ohio0 High
School Regional and State Tournaments from 1970 until 1996. He also
umpired softball for 20 years. He was a player-coach of the Cincinnati
Suds professional slow pitch softball team 1977-1982, the APSPSL playoffs
1978-1982; pitched 10 1/3 scoreless innings in relief in 1980, a league
record and was a tv19 color commentator with Andy McWilliams in 1982 for
eight Suds televised games. He pitched softball for over 30 years with
Wilsman Truckers of Hamilton and the Ohio Players of Dayton.
His accomplishments were: winning pticher in over 1,000 games (1,033 wins,
252 losses), he won the State Tournament eight times, played in nine World
Tournaments, led the 1957 World Industrial Tournament in home runs (7),
finished fourth once and fifth twice in World Tournaments, an All-State
player 4 times, inducted in Dayton, Ohio, slow pitch Softball Hall of Fame,
selected as one of Ohio's all time great softball playersby the Ohio House
of Representatives in 1973, inducted in the Butler County Slow Pitch
Softball Hall of Fame (first inductee) in 1982, inducted in State of Ohio
Softball Hall of Fame (first slow pitch inductee) in 1986, inducted in 1989
in the Ohio High School Athletic Assn., Officials Hall of Fame (Charter
Member/10 inductees) and in 1989 was inducted in the Butler County Sports
Hall of Fame.
He was a member of NEA and OEA (lifetime member) - Administrative Division,
OAESP, past president of the Middletown Elementary Principal's Assoc.,
Executive Committee Elementary Division of National Safety Council,
Chairman of the Middletown Safety Council School Committee, President of
the Middletown Area Safety Council (1978-1979), Past President of the
following organizations, ACE of Middletown, Middletwon Social Workers, OVC
Officials and BCBOA. He was made a Kentucky Colonel in 1968, honored by
the Ohio House of Representatives as one of Ohio's all time great softball
players in 1973, VIP of the year in 1979b in Middletown by Jr. Achievement,
A Special Deputy Butler County Sheriff, President Elect of the Butler
County Elementary Principals Assn. (1986-1987) and made an 8 minute TV film
entitled "Be a Record Setter and Never Smoke" for the American Cancer Society.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; two step-children, Lisa Ivers and
husband Donnie of Fairfield and Scott Wycoff and wife Heather of Hamilton;
two beloved step-grandchildren, Dean Ivers and Lindsay Ivers; five
children, Gary Cosby and wife Vanessa of Fairfield, Karen Fuchs and husband
Matt of Fairfield, Tim Cosby and wife Joan of Houston, Texas, Randy Cosby
and wife Lyn of Atlanta, Georgia, and Scott Cosby of Nashivlle, Tennessee;
five grandchildren, Samuel, Nicholas, Robert and William Cosby, and Kasey
Fuchs; his parents, Carel and Verlie Cosby. He was preceded in death by a
daughter, Linda Carol Cosby in 1973.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at the Oneida
Elementary School, 2901 Yankee Rd., Middletown with burial in Woodside
Mausoleum. Friends may call Tuesday from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Oneida
School In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Oneida
Elementary School
