Subject: RootsWeb in June -- 1,200,000 Hits Per Day

From: Brian Leverich <leverich(a)rootsweb.com>
June was a hectic month at RootsWeb because we significantly
upgraded our main Web server, at the cost of:
o A lot of money
o Several downs of the server
o Lots of sleep missed, vats of coffee consumed
and several stomach linings destroyed
We also brought the new
homepages.rootsweb.com server online,
which will provide home pages for individual genealogists
once we're satisfied with its operation.
The executive summary is that RootsWeb had more than 20%
absolute growth in the last four months, but that's
deceptively low because of the downtime while we upgraded
the main server.
Here are the detailed statistics on our June operations:
o 35,930,194 total Web hits:
- 10,166,861 were HTML pages.
- 6,010,657 were cgi-bin database searches and such.
- 19,514,782 were graphics (gifs, jpegs, etc).
o 779,280 FTP file downloads from the USGenWeb
Archives and the ROOTS-L Library.
o Thanks to a neat hack by Tim Pierce, we know we
shipped more than 77,000,000 pieces of e-mail to
our mailing lists.
(The 77 million is actually much too low; we had
to archive a significant amount of mail before the
count because of a disk space crunch on one of
the mail servers ... )
o 60,000 alt.g and s.g.* Usenet News articles
to hosts on three continents.
o Approximately 660,960,000,000 bytes in total.
As always, RootsWeb remains supported by user contributions.
Folks who would like to become a RootsWeb Member or Sponsor
(the cost is very modest) are invited to visit:

*** You can become a Member easily using your credit card
and our new secure server. ***
Support from the Internet genealogical community is *crucial*
to RootsWeb's operation. Right now, we could be hosting many
more Websites and mailing lists as well as providing many
further services to the community, if only we had the resources
to do so.
Also, we would like to publicly thank Palladium Interactive,
publishers of the superb Ultimate Family Tree software, for
their support of RootsWeb:

Thanks to everyone who participates in RootsWeb -- clearly folks
are continuing to exchanging a great deal of information! -B
