I found the following article in a book called "Tennessee Tidbits-1778-1914,
Vol III" R929.3768 F524 t 1986 V.3. It proves that you need to check all
kinds of spellings. I had never thought about Cogby until now. the only
reason I found it was that the name Cozby is also in the article.

Died before 14 September 1847 as shown in the suit of John D. Traynor, Lemuel
Sugart, James Dardar & others vis Wm. B. Cogby. Wm. Ragsdale & Wm. McDanald
admrs. & c et al. Leave is given the administrators of John Cogly decd. to
file their cross bill. (Bra TN. Ch Ct Min. l/29 4) 30 Aug 1848, in this
cause Meradith W. Legge by his solicitor appeared in open Court and suggested
that he intermarried with Jane Cogly. one of the complainants in this cause,
since the last term of this court. (Ibid 340). A suite was entered 29 Aug
1849 by John Traynor & wife Mary Ann Traynor, Lemuel Shugart & wife Eliza
Shugart, James B. Dardos (Dardor) & wife SarahL. Dardor, Shelton Cozby,
Abigal Cozby *& John Cozby, Jane Cozby, James Cozby infantswho sue by their
next friend John D. Traynor vis William B. Cozby, William McDonald, David
Ragsdale, John Hoyle, Joseph H French, George W. Chattin, Thomas C. Jack,
Evaline Cozby infant under twentyone yersby her Guardian William W. Cowan,
William W. Cowan & wife Isabella Cowan, Joseph Cowan & Gainum McBee (the
writing is badf and I am still not sure of the name of the deceased, Y, Z, g,
all look the same). John Cozby deceased was from Rhea County, Tennessee. An
accountng is to be made. (Ibid 408) The names were shown again 3l Aug 1850
as John D. Traynor & wife Mary Ann Traynor, Leonard Sugart & wife Eliza
Shugart, James B. Dardis & wife Sarah L. DArdis, Shelton Cozly, Abajall
Cozly, John Cozly, Jane Cozly & James Cozly minors who sue by their next
friend John D. Traynor vs William B. Cozly. William McDonald, David
Ragsdale, John Hayes?. Joseph H. French, George W. Chatten, Evaline Cozly
minor, Wm W. Cowan and wife Isabella Cowan, Joseph Cowan W.W. Cowan, guardian
Ad Litem for Evaline Cozly, Gaurum? C. McBee. Slaves were sold and
exceptions listed (ibid 483-90) Division was made 28 Feb 1851, as follows.
To Abigal Cozly the widow: to William B. Cozly, to John D. Traynor: to Lemuel
Shugar & wife: to William W. Cowan & wife Isabella: to James B. Dardis &
wife Sarah L: to Meredith W. Legg & wife Jane; to Shelton Cozly: to John
Cozly to James Cozly: to Eveline Cozly. Each division ws $l473.94 (ibid
2/32-9) 26 Aug 1851 is was stated that John E. Traynor has died since the
last term of Court, leaving his wife, Mary Ann Traynor surviving his. (ibid
60). Another settlement was entered February 1852 showning amounts paid and
to whom (ibid 93-5)
Note: I once saw the Sheldon mentioned in Cedar Co, Missouri on either the
1850 or 1860 census. I failed to write it down, and have not tried to find
it again.
