"Mmkoonc" sent everybody a fascinating list of descendants on 27 June,
one being Descendants of Alexander Cosby. My own family records, and I
don't really have any proof of dates before 1800, are almost the same but
not quite. Here is my contribution, starting with the first Cosby I can
find:
Robert of Cossibey, no dates; his son John of Cossibey, again no dates;
his son Robert Cossibey of Hermaston, Lincolnshire, alive in 1516, whose
wife was Isabel Page, daughter of Ralph Page, Squire of Great Leake,
Nottinghamshire and his wife Isabel Blake; their son John Cosbie married
Mabel de Poston, daughter of Argard de Poston; their son was General
Francis Cosby, abt 1510-1580, who married Mary Seymour, daughter of
Edward Seymore Duke of Somerset, b. 1500, executed 1552, and his wife
Anne Stanhope 1497-1587 (here I have data, if anybody is interested,
going back to Mary Seymour's 7th grandfather King Edward III, and further
back); Francis and Mary's son was Alexander Cosby, b. 1547 at Stradbally
Abbey, Queens Co., Ireland. He was Squire of Stradbally Abbey and died
19 May 1596, the story goes that he died on the bridge there in a battle
wiht the original Irish landowner, who strangely objected to the English
appropriating his property.. Alexander married Dorcas Sydney, daughter
of William Sydney of Oxford, Kent; Dorcas was a maid of honour to
Elizabeth I, and was cousin of Sir Henry Sidney, Lord Lieutenant of
Ireland; she bore 15 children ! to Alexander, including Charles Cosby, b.
12 Sept 1585 in Stradbally Abbey, d. 23 Nov 1633 in Virginia. Charles
came to Virginia in 1628 with his infant son John, settled in York County
which later became Warwick Co. Charles married Mary Loftus, d. 1623,
daughter of Adam Loftus, DD, of Trinity College, Cambridge, Chaplain to
Elizabeth I, became Archbishop of Armagh and Lord Chancellor of Ireland,
was first Provost of the University of Dublin, d. 1605. Adam's wife was a
Mary Pruden. Charles and Mary's son John was born in Stradbally Abbey
in 1623. John died in Virginia in 1696. He married Sarah, surname
unknown, her dates are abt. 1646-1740, and their children included
Charles Cosby, abt. 1675-1765, who married Jane Meriwether, abt.
1670-1760, daughter of a David Meriwether. Charles and Jane's son David
Cosby, 1705-1770, married Mary Overton, 1705-1785, and their son John
Cosby, 1741-1827, married a Sarah Wingfield. John and Sarah's son
Overton Cosby, 1772-1815, was wounded in the War of 1812; he married Ann
Bisset, b. 1785. Overton and Ann's son Thomas D. Cosby, b. 1809,
married a Mary Jane Board, and their daughter Mary Josephine Cosby, b. 26
Mar 1841 in Priceville, KY, d. 29 Oct 1924, was my great-grandmother.
Mary Josephine Cosby married David Crockett Ashbaugh, 1834-1914.
Hope this helps somebody. If anybody wants the royals, true or not, I've
got some for you.
