Ila Chapman
Ila "Maw" Watts Chapman, 98, of U.S. 64 West, Morganton, died Saturday, March
12, 2005 at Grace Heights following a brief illness. Born in Burke County on July 15,
1906, she was a daughter of the late Vance and Sarah Ann Causby Watts. In addition to her
parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David Oscar Chapman; sons-in-law,
Howard Piercy and Odas Saunders; a brother, Wilson Watts; and sisters, Pauline Watts
Hamrick, and Ivey Watts Epley. Mrs. Chapman was the oldest member of Missionary Ridge
Baptist Church.
She is survived by her daughters, Pearl Piercy of Morganton, Nell Saunders of Morganton,
Mary Waters and husband, Hardy, of Morganton, Martha Mull and husband, Spencer, of
Morganton; a brother, Will Watts and wife, Cleo, of Morganton; grandchildren, Joe Piercy
of Rutherfordton, Patsy Lovelace of Morganton, Beth Ross of Morganton, Susan Farrington of
Huntersville; great-grandchildren, Briana Van Dyke of Rutherfordton, Jessica Piercy of
Rutherfordton, Joy Buff of Morganton, Kade Ross of Durham, Matthew Farrington of
Huntersville, Heather Farrington of Huntersville; great-great-grandchildren, Aslyne Tate
of Rutherfordton, Shelby Tate of Rutherfordton, Christopher Van Dyke of Rutherfordton,
Brayson Buff of Morganton; and special sister-in-law, Patricia Chapman of Morganton.
A service of celebration will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday at Missionary Ridge Baptist
Church with the Rev. Donald Lovelace officiating. Burial will follow in the church
cemetery. The family will receive friends in the Life Enrichment Center at the church from
11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. At other times, the family will be at the residence of Patsy and
Donald Lovelace, 3970 US 64 West, Morganton. Memorial contributions may be made to
Missionary Ridge Baptist Church, 5612 John Watts Road, Morganton, NC 28655. Sossoman
Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
