KERNERSVILLE - Hattie Cornelia Causby Grigg of 501 Maverick Road, Kernersville and Kerner
Ridge Assisted Living Center died Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, after a long struggle with
Alzheimer's disease. Mrs. Grigg was born Feb. 14, 1907, in Cleveland County, the
fourth of 12 children, of whom Thomas Ray Causby, Lucille Causby Hamrick, Lydia Causby
Hamrick, Edward Harold Causby and Mavis Causby Austin survive. Cornelia was the daughter
of Andrew Pinkney Causby and Bessie Crow Causby. She was preceded in death by the Rev.
Wendell R. Grigg Sr., her husband of 65 years. Survivors also include her five children
and their spouses, C. Irvin and Ruth Anne Weathers Grigg Sr. of Kernersville, Dr. Kenneth
A. Grigg Sr. of Washington, D.C., Rebecca Lynne Grigg Mayfield and George Mayfield of
Kingsport, Tenn., Dr. Randy and Nancy Helms Grigg of Chapel Hill and Dorcas Cornelia
Grigg-Saito and Yoshio Saito of Boston, Mass. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren and
18 great-grandchildren. She wil!
l be greatly missed and remembered as a loving and dedicated sister, wife, mother,
grandmother, gardener, storyteller, seamstress, painter, religion teacher and
minister's wife by the many whose lives she has touched with her warmth, her sense of
humor, her strength and her graciousness. In 1999 she was recognized by the Bowman Gray
School of Medicine for her "lifetime commitment and devotion to the equality of all
before God and the support of educational pursuit for those in need." She also
received numerous prizes for her sewing and embroidery. The family would like to express
their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Kerner Ridge Assisted Living Center, who have
provided loving care to Cornelia for the past three years. A memorial service will be held
at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, at First Baptist Church, 401 Oakhurst St., Kernersville,
followed by family visitation in the fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts
may be sent and designated for the W.R. and Co!
rnelia C. Grigg Scholarship Fund to Wake Forest University Baptist Med
ical Center, Medical Center Blvd., Winston-Salem, NC 27157. This fund provides
scholarships for minority medical students in need of financial aid.
