Winifred Mangum
Winifred Amos Mangum, 80, of Jug Wilson St., Glen Alpine died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005 at
Caldwell County Hospice in Lenoir following a period of declining health. She was born
Nov. 7, 1924 in Burke County, and was a daughter of the late Maj. James William Amos and
Mary Sue Causby Amos. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her
husband, James Edward Mangum. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Glen Alpine.
After approximately 40 years of work in the medical arena, Winifred retired as the
executive medical secretary for the Lenoir-Rhyne College Division of Nursing.
She is survived by a son, James Robert Mangum Sr. of Glen Alpine; a daughter, Mary Ellen
Mangum of Chapel Hill; brothers, Bill Amos of Columbia, S.C., and Charles Amos of Lugoff,
S.C.; a sister, Carolyn Pirkle of Greenville, S.C.; and grandchildren, James Robert Mangum
Jr. and his fiancée, Vivian Wendt of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Julie Kirk and husband,
Lewie of Morganton.
Funeral services will be held at noon, Monday, at the First Baptist Church of Glen Alpine
with the Rev. Mike Brown officiating. Burial will follow in the Glen Alpine Cemetery. The
family will receive friends on Monday at the church from 11 a.m. to noon. In lieu of
flowers, please make donations to the Lenoir-Rhyne College Nursing Division, P.O. Box
7546, Hickory, NC 28603. Sossoman Funeral Home is assisting the family with the
arrangements.
