Roger Ward
Roger Samuel Ward, 85, of Spindale, died April 20, 2004, in Rutherfordton.
Ward was born in Old Fort. He was a son of the late Cora Causby Ward and James Melger Ward
and the widower of Ruth Aldridge Ward.
He was a member of the Spencer Baptist Church. He was a retired car salesman. Mr. Ward was
an Army veteran, having served in the 609th Tank Destroyer Battalion during the Rhineland,
Ardennes and Central Europe campaigns as a heavy truck driver in World War II. He received
the following decorations and citations: EAMET Campaign Medal with three Bronze Service
Stars, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Medal and a Purple Heart.
He is survived by three sons, Dean Ward of Forest City, Ray Ward of Charlotte and Wayne
Ward of Spindale; one daughter, Carol Ann Karppinen of Charlotte; two sisters, Pauline
Ward of Lexington, Hazel Harris of Columbus; three brothers, James Ward of Shelby, Homer
Ward of Shelby and Hicks Ward of Spindale; 10 grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
Visitation will be at Crowe Funeral Home, Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Spencer Baptist Church with the Revs. Billy Vaughn,
Bruce Caldwell and Keith Stephenson officiating. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Park
in Forest City with military honors.
The family will be at the home of Wayne Ward, 406 Maryland St., Spindale.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
