Earl Causby, 83, of Morganton, NC died Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at Mission Hospital,
Asheville, NC. Born October 6, 1930 in Burke County, NC, he was a son of the late Ivy and
Margaret Causby. From 1951 to 1955 Earl served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War as a
Petty Officer First Class. From 1947 to 1949, he was second baseman on the American Legion
Post 21 baseball team. In 1955 he returned home and joined American Legion Post 21 where
he served as Post Commander for over ten years and as Post Athletic Officer for over ten
years. He was recognized statewide as a pioneer in American Legion Baseball. For more than
forty years his leadership and sponsorship of American Legion Baseball created
opportunities for local High School baseball players. He gave selflessly of his time and
talents to support the development of American Legion Baseball in North Carolina. In 2002
he was inducted into the N. C. American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame. In 2013 he was
inducted into the B!
urke County Sports Hall of Fame. From 1966 until 2010, he was owner of Causby Buick which
is now known as Causby Automotive. Earl served on the Board of Directors of the Junior
Order Children's Home, Lexington, NC and was a member of Salem United Methodist
Church.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Jimmy, Fred and Bobby Causby. Surviving to
cherish his memory are his wife of fifty-six years, Shirley Hayes Causby of the home;
sons, Tony Causby and his wife, Karen and Tod Causby and his wife, Leah all of Morganton;
grandsons, Ty and Tripp Causby; and a brother, Gene Causby of Clayton, NC.
The funeral will be held at Noon, Saturday, April 26, 2014 at Salem United Methodist
Church with the Reverends Mark Conforti and John Davis officiating. Burial will follow in
the church cemetery. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall for one
hour prior to the service. At other times the family will gather at the home of Tony and
Karen Causby.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Earl Causby Legion Scholarship, P.
O. Box 1203, Morganton, NC 28680 or to Salem United Methodist Church Building Fund, 1206
Salem Rd., Morganton, NC 28655.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family.
