SHELBY - Genell Newton Dodson, 85, of Apple Hill Drive, died Tuesday, April 15, 2014, at
Peak Resources of Shelby. A native of Rutherford County, she was the daughter of the late
Joseph and Lola Lail Causby.
She grew up in the Walls Church community, was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and later
retired from Hoechst Celanese. Genell was an avid Atlanta Braves fan, loved her Dukes
mayonnaise, pink roses, country music and especially loved her family and friends. She
also decorated many beautiful cakes for hundreds of people for more than 30 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Fred Charles
Newton; second husband, Oscar "Junior" Dodson; sister, Katie Mae Collins; and
two step-sons, Ronald Dodson and Barry Dodson.
She is survived by her two sons, Roger Newton and wife Rhonda of Greenville, S.C., and
Chris Newton of Shelby; daughter, Christine Pennington of Shelby; brother, Gus Causby and
wife Joyce of Swainsville; seven grandchildren, Shelby Harrington, Joe and Jessica Newton,
Keeley and Joshua Pennington, Krystal Earls and Jonathan Newton; members of the Dodson
family and especially Melissa Dodson Carlisle and Janine Henson Dodson of Forest City;
five great-grandchildren; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Visitation: The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral
home.
Funeral home: 2 p.m. Friday at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home Chapel
