Melvin Moran Causby (1924-2011)
BESSEMER CITY - Melvin Moran Causby, 86, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 4, 2011,
at Cleveland Pines Ebbtide Room in Shelby.
He was born June 5, 1924, in Spencer Mountain, the son of the late Briggsa Moran Causby
and Octavia Thomas Causby.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Causby was preceded in death by his brother, Alson Lee
Causby, and his sisters, Rebecca Ann Landrum and Ruth Virginia Dameron.
He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Bobbie Jo Causby; son, Randy Eugene Causby
of Bessemer City; stepson, Billy Sellers of Bessemer City; brother, Jimmy Reid Causby of
Lompoc, Calif; sisters, Audrey Franklin of Bessemer City and Betty Sue Pigg of Virginia
Beach, Va.; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; friend,
Jerry Boiters; and special niece, Debra Lee Black.
Melvin was a life member of the American Legion, Bessemer City Post 243. He was a veteran
of the U.S. Army, having served as an ambulance driver with the 370th Medical Battalion
during World War II. During his time in the Army, he served in some of the fiercest
battles of the war, including the Normandy Invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. He was
awarded the EAMET Campaign Medal with five bronze stars, Good Conduct Medal, and a Pur-ple
Heart for wounds he received during battle in Belgium.
After his service in the Army, Mr. Causby became a truck driver. He began his truck
driving career with Pilot Trucking and retired from Akers Motor Lines and Kerns Trucking.
He was a faithful Christian who read his Bible daily. He loved watching baseball and
NASCAR on television. Melvin was a man with a heart of gold and will be greatly missed by
all who knew him.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Greene Funeral Service, West
Chapel, Gastonia. The funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
The service will be officiated by the Rev. Jerry Millwood.
Interment will be at Westview Gardens.
Military honors will be provided by the American Legion.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to American Legion Post 243, 152 Long Creek Rd.,
Bessemer City, NC 28016; or
First Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 397, Bessemer City, NC 28016.
