My ggggrandmother, Mary Cosby (b. Sept. 5, 1761, Goochland Co., Va., d.
after 1850, probably in Lumpkin Co., Ga.) married William Bowman (b.
1755 in Chesterfield Co., Va., d. 1808 in Rutherford Co., N.C.) in
Goochland County on Dec. 28, 1779. She was the daughter of Samuel Cosby
and Elizabeth Faure/ffaure/Ford. She had a brother William. A sister or
half-sister Elizabeth. A half-sister, Patty Mosely Cosby by her father's
second wife, Mildred Poor. Samuel Cosby was the son of Samuel Cosby and
Magdalene Pasteur, the daughter of Dr. Jean Pasteur. Samuel was the son
of James Cosby and Anne Stribling. The line goes Mary<Samuel (Elizabeth
Faure) < Samuel (Magdalene Pasteur) < James (Anne Stribling) < John
(Sarah ??) < Charles (Mary Loftus) < Alexander (Mary Dorcus Sydney) <
Francis (Mary Seymour)
If I followed this correctly our last common generation was John Cosby
and Sarah ??LNU??, my gggggg grandparents. If I count correctly we're
seventh cousins. If you are interested in distant cousins I have posted
Mary's descendants on a FTM user homepage. Happy hunting, Jim Bowman in
Cherryville, N.C.

Married Mary Loftus (dtr of Dr Adam Loftus, formerly of Trinity College,
Cambridge, later Archbishop of Armagh and Lord Chancellor of Ireland
under Elizabeth I; son of Edward Loftus of Swineshead, Yorkshire,
England). Mary died soon after the birth of their son, in 1623.
Charles came to America about 1626 or 1628, with his son John. Charles
may have returned to Ireland and died there. John stayed here, however.

John was born in Ireland, on the family estate, Stradbally Hall (which is
still in the family, BTW -- current owner Adrian Cosby).
Mary is in the wrong generation; she was John's mother, not wife. John's
wife was Sarah [last name unknown]. She was his second wife and survived
him; her will was probated in 1740, York Co., VA.

I am enjoying all of these posts regarding the early Cosby lines. I sure
wish I could find the parents of William Causby who purchased property in
Burke County, NC in 1778. Do any of you with the Virginia connections
have a William who could be this one?
Wanda
Hi James,
I am a fairly new COSBY (all spellings) researcher. Do you have a list of
children for James COSBY who married Isabella WOODS? I am descended from
Wiley COSBY, (c 1795-c 1849; disappeared during The Gold Rush). He last
lived in Washington County, AR, in 1848. Family oral history says that James
Woods COSBY, son of your James and Isabella, is my Wiley's father. However,
I recently made contact with cousins who have Wiley's father as James Spencer
COZBY and Wiley's grandfather as William COZBY. I am just trying to gather
as much information and as many sources as possible. Any hints?
Thanks,

sketchy
information.
