Hi,
My apologies for the late reply to your post. I read it at the time and was very
interested in and appreciative of the information you sent me about James Caulfield. I
meant to reply at the time but obviously got distracted by something else and didn't
get around to it.
James Caulfield was an excise man for the Department Of Inland Revenue - originally in
Belfast, then London, Lochgilphead, Birmingham and Wallasey in Cheshire where he died.
Apparently they were moved around pretty regularly to avoid developing relationships that
could lead to bribery. Over the last three years I have been in regular contact with most
of his descendants who are my third cousins, after tracking them down. They will be very
interested in the information you have provided.
My great-grandfather, Daniel Caulfield, sometimes said he was born in Lochgilphead. He was
actually born in Monaghan, Ireland, where the family came from. His mother died when he
was three so it is possible that he spent some time with James and his family in
Scotland.
I have been to the UK twice in the last three years for a month at a time to catch up with
the relatives. I am sure at some stage some of them will get up to Lochgilphead to explore
where their family lived for some years. Hopefully one of these trips will coincide with
one of my visits to the UK.
Thanks again for your help and if you come across any more local information on James
Caulfield and his family it would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Tom Caulfield
