George,
Any chance your William might have a brother "John" born 1836? Can't seem
to trace this family. I have conflicting census reports - some say he was
born in Ireland, others in Baltimore. Just can't place the family.

Reading your listing of a Thomas Caulfield living in Phila. in 1880,
well
I have a William H. Caulfield born about 1830 and I first find him married
and living in Manhattan in 1855. He was married to Ann Kelly and the had a
few children by then. They later moved to Brooklyn, NY. Many of the
children's name are the same as yours. If he was born in (1827), It's
possible that they are brothers that settled in different places. Let me
know if you see any resembulances.

Re Thomas Caulfield in Philadelphia. Have you checked the 1880 Census? You
will find a Thomas Caulfield, age 53, born in Ireland, widowed, occupation
"butter & eggs," living in Philadelphia with sons James and Thomas and
daughters Elizabeth and Catherine. He is the right age to be yours. If
that
sounds like your family, take a look on the FamilySearch website.
