My reply to roll call: I subscribed to the Caulfield List to search for
clues as to the origin in Ireland, possible siblings, and other family
members of Arthur "Coffield". Variations in the spelling of the surname are
numerous!
Arthur Coffield b. abt. 1752 in Ireland, said to have immigrated to America
as a "young man" and lived in several locations during his long life:
Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky, and finally Ohio where subject is
said to have died in or near Clark County, Ohio in 1849. Said to have been
a weaver by trade. Known children were born beginning in the 1790's - which
indicates he may have had children with another wife during the years
roughly 1770's and 1780's, perhaps in Ireland and/or Virginia.
Known wife named Sarah Eckles, very likely the daughter of Arthur Eckles of
Western Pennsylvania. Sarah said to have died about 1823. Known children:
John C. Coffield (Clark Co. Ohio), Arthur Coffield (Miami Co. Ohio),
Margaret or Minnie Elder (possibly Doherty), Sarah Castle (Cass Co.
Indiana), Jane Castle (Newton Co, Indiana), Mary Ann Wilson (Ohio - Greene
County, possibly Darke Co,), and
Ruth (Martin) Peck (Greene Co, Ohio and Cass County, Indiana). Descendants
are numerous! Spelling of the surname stabilized to Coffield about the mid
1800's. -------- Linda Pugh
