CONSTABLE HAINLINE TELLS HIS STORY OF CAULFIELD'S KILLING
WOODLAND (Yolo Co.), October 30 - John CAULFIELD, a resident of Davisville,
was shot in the abdomen by Constable HAINLINE of that place Saturday night,
in the discharge of his duty, according to report. Caulfield died half an
hour after the shooting.
Caulfield, it will be remembered, is the saloon keeper who had his license
taken away from him by the Supervisors about two months ago for keeping his
place of business open after 6 p.m. on Sundays, in violation of the county
ordinance, which requires all saloons to close their doors at that hour.
Caulfield has held a grudge against Constable Hainline ever since, having
held the officer responsible for the loss of his license.
Constable Hainline was in Woodland yesterday and gave the following
account of the shooting and the circumstances leading up to it:
Caulfield was very troublesome ever since his license was revoked and drank
heavily. As I had arrested him, he seemed to think I was responsible for his
plight,, and also seemed to think I could get his license back for him
again. He talked with me about it several times.
"Saturday evening about 7 o'clock I was sitting in a store reading when I
heard several shots fired. I went out and looked around, but could see
nothing, and walked up the street. After going a block I heard more shots
and was told that Caulfield was under the influence of liquor and was doing
the shooting.
"I went down to his former place of business and going in found him. When
he saw me he applied a vile epithet and told me to get out of the room. I
told him he would have to stop shooting or I would arrest him. I then left
the building. About an hour later I heard some more shots, and on going to
investigate was told that it was Caulfield again, and that I ought to place
him under arrest, as there were lots of people on the street and someone
might get hurt. I again went to his former place of business and found him
behind the bar loading his revolver. He again became enraged when he saw me
and again applied a vile epithet, telling be to get out. I went up to the
front of the bar and told him he was under arrest. He kept pointing his gun
at me and I backed off toward the door. He came around from behind the bar
and I pulled my revolver. I got the drop on him and told him he had better
submit quietly.
"He seemed to be on the point of doing so when his wife, who was also
under the influence of liquor, came in the room and told him to shoot me. He
grew more enraged and kept coming toward me. I backed out of the door to the
middle of the sidewalk. When he reached the door he threw up his gun and
fired. I dodged as he did so and the bullet went by my head, the powder
burning the right side of my face. I fired and he fired another shot which
plowed up the sidewalk at my feet. Caulfield fell.
"A crowd quickly gathered and a physician was summoned, but he could not
be of any assistance."
Hainline telephoned to the officers and asked if he should come to
Woodland and give himself up, but was told not to come. District Attorney
HUSTON, Coroner KITTO and Constable PARKER went to Davisville that night. It
was decided to hold the inquest to-day.
Caulfield was at one time a man of god (sic) reputation, but he took to
drink and became a sot. He was about 62 years of age and leaves a wife, two
daughters and a son.
He and Hainline formerly were friends and his name is now on the
Constable's official bond.
INQUEST POSTPONED
DAVISVILLE (Yolo Co.), October 30 - District Attorney HUSTON, Coroner KITTO
and the Court Reporter, Miss WILLIAMS, arrived here form Woodland this
morning. A jury was secured but the inquest over Caulfield was postponed
until to-morrow afternoon.
From present indication there is going to be a fight and an effort made to
cause Constable HAINLINE's arrest. Relatives of the dead man doubt the
officer's story of the killing.
Caulfield was a father-in-law of Trustee Edward McEWEN, of Sacramento.
