Hi Rhiannon,
I am so very excited to hear from you. For so long I have thought I
was at a hopeless dead-end . . . I've not even looked at this branch
of the family in more than a year!
My great grandfather, John Caulfield was born about 1839 and
immigrated to America sometime before Sept 11, 1872, the date he
married my great grandmother, Sarah Lyons. When asked where he was
from, he gave the answer, Co Tipperary, near Carringen (sp?). His
mother's name was Mary Costello and was born about 1802 - 1805. John
was a coal miner. He & Sarah lived in Danville, Illinois, with their
children at the time of the 1880 Census.
A woman named Honora Caulfield Britt also lived in Danville at that
time and I'm pretty sure she was John's sister. There is a man named
Ambrose Caulfield who immigrated on the same ship as Honora who may be
a brother or other close relative. All three (John, Honora & Ambrose
gave their mother's name as Mary Caulfield.
Knowing how Irish families used the same names over & over, it might
help for you to know John's children's names. They are:
Kate (probably Sarah's child from a previous marriage)
William
Honora
Mary
John J
Michael Lawrence (my grandfather)
We need more information to know for sure that we are related. I'll
gladly share anything I have. I've never communicated with anyone on
a message board before. Is there a better way to get into more detail?
Rebecca
