Message Board Post:
Hi all,
Trying to learn more about my husband's and children's Irish roots. My husband
and son are both James Patricks and represent the 4th and 5th generations in America for
this line.
What I have gained from local records follows.
Descendants of Patrick Francis Caulfield.
Generation No. 1
1. PATRICK FRANCIS CAULFIELD was born 1840 in probably County Mayo, Ireland, and died 1928
in Salem Salem County, NJ. Census records indicate he immigrated from Ireland in October
of 1868 when he was abt. 26 years of age. On the 1920 census he states he was naturalized
in 1879, but his Naturalization records in the Salem County Courthouse state the year was
actually 1883 A Mr. Kelly was his sponsor.
He married ANN WILEY/MCNELEY?, daughter of JOHN Wiley/McNeley? and ? MCFERSSON?.(her death
certificate unreadable in parts) She was born 1844 in Balehauncess, (how they spelled it
on cert.) County Mayo, Ireland, and died 26 May 1921 in Salem Co., NJ. In the 1920 census
she stated she immigrated in 1866 and became a Naturalized US citizen in 1879.
Notes for PATRICK FRANCIS CAULFIELD:
1876 Map Atlas for Gloucester and Salem counties shows an F. Caulfield near Center Square
and an area known as Irishtown. He may have been known locally as Frank Caulfield?
children of PATRICK CAULFIELD and ANN WILEY/MCNELEY? are:
2. i. JAMES FRANCIS CAULFIELD, b. 29 May 1877; d. 1962.
ii. JOHN P. CAULFIELD, b. 1878; d. 22 May 1912 ).
Generation No. 2
2. JAMES FRANCIS2 CAULFIELD (PATRICK FRANCIS1) was born 29 May 1877 , and died 1962. He
married BRIDGET CECILIA BONES, daughter of ROGER BONES. She was born 1874 in Ireland, and
died 1964 in Salem Co., NJ.
Notes for JAMES FRANCIS CAULFIELD:Logan Twp. Records, Gloucester county, New Jersey
James Caulfield b. May 29, 1877 in Centre Square, male, parents Patrick and Ann Caulfield
. His father a farm laborer of Center Square, Logan Twp, Gloucester Co, NJ
Notes for BRIDGET CECILIA BONES: Talked to my mother -in -law about this family. Marie
Duffy she says was a sister, that a couple of brothers lived in Philadelphia and were cops
- Thomas and Jim she thought. Rodger Bones was her father, drowned as crossing the English
channel on a ferry. Left a widow with a bunch of kids, most of the kids came over to
America, though she didn't think the mother did.
She said that Helen O'Conner was a niece to Tom's ( My father in law) mother, so
his cousin. Mary Burns a stepmother, but I am not clear of who? Lavina, Jack Ridgeway,
Charles - these tied to the Duffy side? Betty thinks so. Lived on Auburn road, just off of
North Main st., Woodstown.
Children of JAMES CAULFIELD and BRIDGET BONES are:
i. ANNA CAULFIELD, m. JOSEPH GRAHM; .Aunt Anna, I was told, used to still write to some
Irish cousins, one of which may have been a nun.
ii. JAMES PATRICK CAULFIELD, b. 1911; d. 1942; m. ANN DEMARIS, divorced when children were
young; she was from Sharptown, Salem County, New Jersey.
iii. THOMAS MICHAEL CAULFIELD, b. 01 May 1913, Woodstown, NJ12; d. 13 July 1985, Salem
Co., NJ; m. ELIZABETH SZYMBORSKI; b. 02 May; d. 06 December 2002.
These were my husband's people. His mother,
Elizabeth (Betty) Szymborski, of Polish and Irish heritage...her grandfather Lou
Szymborski was married to a Mary Hines, (Irish) and lived in Camden, NJ, but I have no
further record at this point.
Would love to hear from any cousins, on either side of the Atlantic.
Thanks,
Val
