I came across your query while searching other names in Lochgilphead. I think I am the
Caulfield referred to in the reply you got in June 2010. I live in Lochgilphead, Argyll,
Scotland but am not a native of the town. I have Irish ancestry in the Caulfield name but
the names I am aware of are in the County Down area.
The name James Caulfield that I saw in your post is probably James who lived in
Lochgilphead around 1888 living in a house called Glenburn House, on Glenburn Road,
Ardrishaig. [a village next to Lochgilphead] That would be the reason Louis Algernon and
Gertrude Winifred were shown as being born in Lochgilphead. He was an Excise-man. Whilst
researching on another subject i came across a report in our local newspaper
'Argyllshire Advertiser' 23/3/1888 reporting that John has been involved in an
altercation with a Neil Gillies [stand up fight] in Colchester Square, Lochgilphead. He
went to trial in the local Burgh Court when he was found Not Guilty. Gillies was found
guilty and fine 7/6d or 3 days in jail. The reason there were excisemen in the town was
for the 2 local distilleries active at the time. i hope this is of interest to you
