Some of these variations were used by the family but we need to keep in
mind that some were what the census taker wrote phonetically. What is funny is
when one finds three different spellings of a name within the same
document - either a Clerk's copy of a will or in a deed.

Caulfield is one of the most misspelled surnames. When checking
records,
look also for Caufield, Cawfield, Coffield, Coffey and Canfield.
After much
searching, I found a Caulfield ancestor in the 1850 US Census with the
spelling Corfield. In Canadian records, I have seen the name
spelled Caulfin.
