together.

11 Nov 99, Hi John. Thanks for the info. on the Coulters. I'm going to
try to continue to track them down. Here's an interesting blurp about Lady
Jane Caughey. Especially since here Father was a James Caughey, a
Methodist. He fits the time frame of a James Caughey I'm searching for. It
seems everyone that is related to a Caughey came from Co Down. Keep an eye
out for any Methodist in the pre 1820 days. This is the first time I ran
across an olde time Caughey who wasn't a Presbyterian. Someone in another
family became a Babtist in 1808 and his family ran him out of town and he
was never seen again.
This is from a booklet in the Mercer County Historical Society written in
1944 by Carl Van Dusen "Genealogical Record of the Decendents of the John
and >Nancy (Roberts) McGranahan Family, and I won't attempt to clean up his
spelling or grammar. From the section on the Stevenson family ... Their
oldest son William for a number of years lived in Scotland. John moved to
England and raised a large family. The third son James (To whom the
Stevenson's of Mercer County are decendents) was born in the County Down
Ireland October 18th 1760. He spent the early part of his life there. On
July 19th 1782 he married to Jane Caughey. Jane was born in Ireland in May
1760, one of her ancesters bore the title of Lady in Scotland. Her fathers
name was James Caughey, he came from Scotland, but unlike William Stevenson
he was a methodist and served as a class leader for John Westley, his wifes
name was Jackson and we have it on good authority that she was an aunt of
General Jackson. Sometime near 1790 the family moved to America, they
landed at Philadelphia, later they moved to Chester County, Pennsylvania,
from there the family moved to Westmoreland County Penna. and in the spring
of 1797 James Stevenson and his son James Jr. with others came to the new
settlement in what is now known as Salem-Sugar Grove Townships Mercer
County Pennsylvania. James and Jane Caughey Stevenson were the parents of
seven children, James Jr, William and Mary were born in Ireland, Elizabeth
was born at Philadelphia, a little girl named Agnes was born in Chester
County and died a few months later, and the sons John and Findley were born
at the settlement. Too bad he didn't cite any sources other than "good
authority" but there might be a few leads for you there.
