Having read John's comments about the relationship between Catholics and Presbyterians
in earlier times, followed by the message about the atrocity performed on his son makes me
wonder why history books seem to indicate that conditions were worse then than now. As an
American decendant of NI Presbyterians it is extremely hard to understand such behavior in
the name of anything, much less religion. Of course we have madmen flying planes into
buildings over here so who knows what makes people tick?

The relationship of Presbyterians and Roman Catholics at the
beginning of the 19th century in Ireland may be illustrated from
the atrocities of the years before the rebellion of 1798, and the
opening decades of the century.
When 1,400 Roman Catholics were burned out of their homes in Co.
Armagh, the Presbyterians of Belfast, Carnmoney and Templepatrick
sheltered them in their homes, and to quote one of their own
historians who witnessed the events, "made a stock-purse, and by
weekly allowances, in proportion to the number of exterminated
families, supported them till they could procure work or
settlement."
