Apparently I missed the first posting on this subject. I was offline with PC
problems a couple of days. Could someone copy the previous message that this
in reply to, to me at gmxwater(a)n-link.com ? I would surely appreciate it.
Why is Caudill always on lists of Melungeon names and is the Mary Fields,
that Stephen married, connected to the Melungeon Fields?

Cavaliers &Pioneers,1623-1666, by Nugent,vol 1, on page 55 lists
a
Phillipp Caudell who was one of 12 persons transported in 13Apr1637 to work
under Patrick Kennede. There is a Antho(Antoine?)Caudell was transported
8Dec1656 as one of 44 persons sent under Henry Chichley. In vol 2 there is
Augustine Caudle transported 28Feb1682/3. James Cawdle and Benjamine
Clements bought property 1683. Vol 3 lists John Caudall sent to the Surry
Plantation 28 Apr 1711. Stephen Cawdle purchased 195 acs 25Aug1731in Surry
Co. James Caudle has property in St.Stephens Parish, King & Queen Co. 24 Apr
1703. We can also find a Stephen Caudle christened 21 Nov 1688,
Withington,Gloucester,Eng. His father was Stephen and his mother Mary(LDS
batch#c032853).If I were to guess I would say that the Caudles/Caudills were
French Huguenots who first escaped to England in the late 1500s and then
came to America in droves in the 1700s. The Scots didn't come in numbers
until 1770 and after. My family lived in t!
he Blue Ridge for over 200 years and weren't known for walking
far to find
a bride. Whatever came into the mountains became part of the family.
