i do believe i posted that Scotland was one of the orgins of the Caudill family, not the
only way...the fact that the spelling "Caudle" is common in France and England
should likewise be no surprise...many of the folks handling the registration of new
colonists were English and may have well spelled the name the way they knew it...likewise,
Scotland had a fair amount of Norman influence beginning in the 12th Century or
so...Robert de Brus, coming to mind almost immediately...
in my case, i didn't jump to a conclusion about the orgin of my Caudill relatives...it
was taught to me by my grandmother (Caudill was her maiden name)...she knew quite abit
about her Scottish roots, the fact that her early American ancestors came from
Scotland...her stories and her version of the family history provided much confusion in
confirming the orgin of the name...but given that her family had always lived in the Blue
Ridge mountain region of Virginia and North Carolina, taken in context with the
predominant cultural group of the area (Scotch-Irish) made it obvious that the Caudills
from which i am descended are Scots...
the Caudles/Caudills in your family tree may well be French, English or Spanish...i do not
doubt that...there are some surnames that are common across several national
boundaries...
