Stephanie,
Yes I would like a copy of Aris & Polly's tombstones. Where are they buried?
I found Josiah Caudill in the 1870 census for Laurel Springs, Cranberry Twp, Alleghany,
NC, family #67
Caudill, Josiah 57
Elizabeth 58
Fanny 25 (might be 20, hard to read)
Aris 15
I also found him listed in the 1860 census for Gap Civil, Alleghany, NC, family #326, all
born in NC.
Josiah Caudle, age 47, M, Farmer
Sallie, age 21, F
William, age 19, M, Laborer
Columbus, age 17, M, Laborer
Henry, age 13, M
Fanny, age 11, F
Aris, age 6, M
Fariba? Caudle, age 20, F, Dometic
2 families later, I found the following for John Hollaway
Family #328, page 44, census date 18 Jul 1860, all born in NC
John Hollaway, age 34, M, Farmer
Patty, age 30, F
Reid, age 12, M
Isaac, age 10, M
Amanda, age 8, F
Polly, age 6, F
Jacob, age 4, M
I think these are probably Polly's parents. There is a listing in the 1870 census,
close to the Josiah Caudill family for a Patsy Holaway, with daughters Mandy and Perlina,
but no husband. I think this may be the same family.
Since there is no wife listed for Josiah in the 1860 census, and a wife named Elizabeth in
the 1870 census, I'm wondering where Matilda Waggoner fits in. I saw the photo posted
by Janet Crain of Matilda, and was quite amazed, since I have the same photograph hanging
on my wall. The back of mine says the person is Polly (Holloway) Caudill, taken in 1918.
This is not necessarily accurate, since the photo is a copy from a great granddaughter of
Polly Caudill, and according to my information, both Polly and Matilda were deceased prior
to 1918. If anyone can shed some light on this mystery, please do.
Cherie
