Hi, I have been looking for my grandmother Josie Caudill, for a very long time. I was born
in 1963. She died aprox. 1935. My father was only 5. He was one of a family of 10
children. She was said to have died in childbirth. The name of the last child is believed
to be Jennie B. Justice. I have found the death certificate for Jennie, and a couple of
census showing Josie as the spouse of my grandfather, Mathew Justice, along with known
aunts and uncles.
All census say born in Kentucky. I can trace all of my lines back several generations
switching back and forth over the mountains of W. Va., Ky., and Va. with many surnames
intersecting at different points. WHY, can I not find the name of a woman who was mother
to 10 children, and died at the age of 36??? Information has been slim with the passing of
time. I recall she was raised by a women named "Belle Fraley" and for some
reason the names Estep and Maddox linger in my memory.
I have ran the mountains of McDowell County W. Va. as I believe that is where she was
buried. The closest I have gotten is Longpole on Panther Creek off of the Tug River, but
nothing. She was said to have been Cherokee, and from photos, there was little doubt in my
mind. She was beautiful and deserves to have a beginning and an end, not just a
nondescript middle, with nothing left behind to know where she came from, and her
grandchildren as well.
Please, anyone familiar with the Caudill name, and possible information about Josie
Caudill Justice from Ky., W. Va.,b.abt. 1899 d. abt 1936 please respond!
Thank you. Any information and tips would be greatly appreciated. Nancy
