By tradition, (i.e. no documentation that I'm aware of), James' father was
'Stephen' (b. abt. 1680). There's a grant dated August of 1731 where
Stephen CAWDLE is receiving 95 acres on the Nottoway River. There are other
later land records, 1859, where a Stephen CAUDLE is buying 400 acres at the
'fork of the 'Great Creek' in Lunenburg County VA. Matthew Laffoon also
receives 400 acres of adjacent land at the same time. I actually located
the property. It's right on the border of Lunenburg and Surry County on
Flat Rock Road, north side. There's a pond there that used to be known as
Lafoon Mill (1860's). It's my supposition (deduction) that these are two
different Stephen's and not the same man. The dates are just too improbable
for me. The CAUDLES and Laffoon's can be later found in Surry County NC
(1826 document). Stephen Dennis Lafoon, Matthew's grandson as I recall, is
with a Lewis Caudle.
Our Caudill YDNA Project has demonstrated without question that there is an
undeniable genetic relationship between JEREMIAH CAUDILL (b. 1779), BENJAMIN
CAUDELL (b. 1757), ABSALOM CAUDLE (b. 1757) - son of Rev. War BENJAMIN
CAUDLE (b. 1725), JESSE CAUDILL (b. 1795), JEREMIAH CORDELL (b. 1775),
STEPHEN A. CAUDILL (b. 1763), JAMES CAUDILL, Jr. (b. 1753), to summarize but
a few of our findings. The CAUDELL derivation is the Georgia Clan (Banks
County area). Habersham is next to Banks County so Elnathan as son of
Benjamin (1757) would seem to make sense. You'll find the CORDELL spelling
coming from areas of KY and elsewhere. CAUDILL and CAUDLE are common in
western NC. CAUDLE is the oldest spelling I find giving exception to
Stephen CAWDLE of 1731 land record. You can find CAWDLE in old records out
of England as well (Glouchester area).
If you know a male CAUDILL (whatever spelling trips your trigger) that
descends from Elnathan, Abner Caudill, William 'Granpa Billy' Caudill, Lewis
Caudle, or other older lines, please encourage them to join our project.
There is a cost, but boy, are we getting great information!
Thanks to all Caudill Cousins ...

Subject: [CAUDILL] Caudill, Cordle, etc.
Thank you for the messages I've received about Caudill, etc., families.
The first generation I have info on (and that isn't much) is James Caudill,
Sr., supposedly born abt. 1718 in Virginia and died May 30, 1840. He
married Mary Yarborough, born abt. 1731.
One of their children was Benjamin, born 1757 in Virginia, died 1835 -- he
married Sarah Humphrey, born about 1770 in Virginia.
One of the children of Benjamin and Sarah was Elnathan Cordle, b. abt. 1790,
perhaps in Rowan County, NC; he died in 1840. Elnathan married Sarah
Jennings, born 1793 NC, died 1886 Mercer County, MO.
Children of Elnathan and Sarah were, Elizabeth, Malinda Ann, Lucinda, Nathan
Madison, and William Sanford. There was one child born about 1820 in
Habersham Co., GA whose name I do not have.
I am interested in learning as much as I can about the earlier generations
and will appreciate hearing from others researching any of these
generations.
