In "Appalachian Crossroads: The Caudill Family, vol 2-4," the author Clayton Cox
lays out the "family myth" that all Caudills are descended from a
Spanish/Portuguese soldier that was on the Spanish Armada ship that was sunk in Tobermory
Bay, Argylshire, Scotland. These soldiers spent a year or more afterwards in Scotland.
Harry M. Caudill restates this story in "Night Comes to the Cumberlands." I
have heard it all my life. After having my father's DNA done, it also proves Spanish
& Portuguese ancestry, mixed in with Scottish, English and Irish. After a trip to the
Family History Library in Salt Lake in 1997, I also found the Caudill link to Argylshire,
Scotland. Interesting stuff ~ am trying to determine which "El Caudillo" is our
patron.
