First of all, I would like to start out by dispelling any potential
misunderstandings or rumors that Clayton R. Cox started the James Caudill,
Sr., and Mary Yarbrough 'thing' in his "Appalachia Crossroads: The Caudill
Family" book. He only mentions James Caudill, Sr., and Mary Yarbrough 5
times in his three volume, 2865 page book and in each case he used a
question mark (?) in front of the Yarbrough surname. I have included
excerpts from those 5 occassions below for reference.
So, if there is anyone to blame in regard to perpetuating the James
Caudill, Sr., and Mary Yarbrough 'rumor' it should be researchers like
myself who did not continue to use the question mark with the Yarbrough
surname. However, it seems like I have seen other sources for the James
Caudill, Sr., and Mary Yarbrough connection but, unfortunately, I can't
seem to find them at the moment (I know, shame on me for not recording
sources, but I was a newbie at the time). :)
By the way, Clayton Cox does mention the 'younger' James Caudle and
Mary Yarbrough in Chapter 123 of his book (see the two excerpts below).
