I felt that the following discussion which is taking place on the
Caudill Message Board at Delphi was important enough to post here on the
List just in case some of you do not visit the Message Boards. Since most
of us descend from the 'supposed' James Caudill, Sr., and Mary Yarbrough
union, I think there would be a mutual benefit to us all if we could work
together and try to solve this apparent descrepancy. Let's begin a
discussion on this List in regard to any known source materials and/or a
research plan that would help to prove/disprove that James Caudill, Sr.,
was married to a Mary Yarbrough. Any ideas?

My husband descends from William Caudle b. abt 1785 in VA and Gracie
Broadway, through their son James CORDELL b.1823 (spelling on 1850 Surry
CO. NC) census who married Mary YARBROUGH 1/22/1849. This James and Mary
moved to Grayson County VA about 1854, where the name was spelled Caudle
and her family moved there as well and her family's name was spelled
YARBER. Brothers of James stayed in NC and their names varied from Cordle
and Cordel to Caudill on the censuses. James and Mary had several children
in Grayson Co. VA. One of them, the last born, being James Pleasant Caudle
b. 1865 who married (1) Malinda Booth about 1890 and (2) Sarah Jane Moxley
about 1904. James and Malinda had a child, Croner Gray Caudell who is the
grandfather of my husband. I would love to hear from anyone out there with
connection to this line. First cousins to my husband's grandfather were
living in Alleghany County NC where the name was Caudill. I can give more
names and dates to anyone interested. I just got into this site and I think
it is great!

I was e-mailed by a Rich but was unable to e-mail him back, it came back
user unknown, so I decided to put the discussion here. Here is the quandry:
James Caudle, son of Stephen married Mary Yarbrough in 1749 in Lunenburg Co
VA, a fact we all have in our notes. In my line I have:
James Caudle, born 1823, son of William Caudle and Gracie Broadway, married
Mary Yarbrough, 1-22-1849 in Surry County NC. I have been trying to connect
this line to Stephen, unsuccessful so far, but could this James have known
about the earlier Mary Yarbrough?
Karen Mazock, a Yarbrough researcher has also been quite puzzled by this.

Dear Karen,
James and Mary Yarbough 1749 is not a fact. This is info that old timers
handed down for years. I have been looking for evidence that Mary was a
Yarbourgh for 6 years and have found nothing. It is in everyones notes but
with nothing to back it up. I would say that the James 1849 and that Mary
is correct. I believe the Mary 1749 to have possibly been a Ross but can't
prove that either. If you ever find anything please let me know.
Thanks Kathi Jo Caudill Robinson

Hi Kathy Jo,
From the US GenWeb; NC/Surry/Vitals: Surry County marriages to
1850-James
Caudill m. Mary Yarbrough 1/22/1849. The Caudills are full of stories.
Rich
I have a question on your dates for James Caudill and Mary Yarbrough. My
records indicate a marriage date of Jan 1,1748/49(this is due to calendar
change) in Lunenburg Co.,VA. I realize that the name James is repeated but
is it a coincidence that a James should marry another Mary Yarbrough? Rich

Rich,
Do you have documentation as to the 1748/49 marriage of James and Mary
Yarbourgh? I have seen the marriage record for the other marriage that
occured in 1848. Since I have never witnessed proof of the 1749 marriage I
find it hard to believe that in the same month,100 yrs. later a James
Caudill marries a Mary Yarbourgh. I realize we are dealing with about 100
James Caudill's but I can't buy into that one. I feel these are areas we
need to search in as Caudill decendants. My line is pretty firm through
Matthew but when I get to James I am not clear on a lot of things. We all
need to concentrate on early Va. and NC and even further back. Let me
know if you have seen this marriage certificate. Also, if you have ever
looked over Clayton Cox's book he post a lot of early deeds, tax lists,
marriages etc. He didn't find proof of that marriage or he would have
surely printed it. Keep in touch and let me know what you know on this.
Sure we are related somehow Kathi Jo Caudill Robinson

Re Mary Yarborough and James Caudle 1749 vs 1849. This first appeared
several years ago in news letter by a B.Adams who issued her fam.tree. On
receiving this I tried to contact her with no success. If you note the day,
month are the same and the only difference in the year is 1749 vs 1849.
The news Letter was The Mountain Empire and they at that time could shed no
light on it either.
I believe that a slight mistake was made and the fact that no proof at all
(if some one has it - proof I Mean - please make it available to the rest
of us)we should discontinue using the info re the James and Mary of 1749's
marriage as this can confuse many people who believe everything they read
without duly checking it themselves to verify. This is a positive procedure
all certified Genealogists do on receipt of any info.
I spoke to Clayton Cox about this at one time also, plua exchanging some
letters and he said he had not done any research at all but had merely
gathered it all together from people who wrote in to :The East Kentuckian,
of which he ws the Editor for several years. One of those persons was
Sebastian Cox of North Wilkesboro, who was searching the Adams line. The
data that has been issued by some that info supplied by some that Benjamin
Caudle lived and owned land in Surry Co Va., or any adjacent county is also
unproven. If you check out records in Fairfax and Loudon Co. Va. I believe
you will find that the initial connection between these to families, namely
Adams and Caudle (Caudill if you wish) was in that area.
Those of you who live within reach of the Library at Frankfort
Ky will be able to review many of the original pages of the East Kentuckian
and find interesting info.

I do know that Yarbrough researchers are also quite puzzled by the
similarities and that they also have tried to prove the first Mary
Yarbrough (or Yarborough) to James Caudle in 1749. There are accounts of
Yarborough families in Amelia and other counties close to the shore in the
very early 1700's.
Of the following, I am sure, James Caudle and Mary Yarbrough married in
1849 are indeed the ancestors of my husband. A handwritten page in my
husband's grandfather's bible gave the birthdate and year of a Mary Yarber
(as it was spelled in Grayson County Va) that matches that of the Surry
County NC Mary, as does the entry for James. It was not until I found the
Surry Co NC marriages of Cadle to Celtin from rootseeb, that I was able to
identify the parents of my husband's grandfather's father, James Pleasant
Caudle, born 1865 in VA, son of James and Mary.

Hi Kathi,
Long time no talk or receive any messages. I am very pleased to see that
your research on the James and Mary (Yarborough) Caudle is the same as
mine - I totally agree that what may be written down in some ones computer,
group sheet or anything else about James and Mary (Yarborough) Caudle
marriage of 1749 is not a fact but possibly a figment of some ones
imagination. I also agree that it is highly possible but not completely
proven that James Caudle's first marriage was to Mary Ross. Checking the
Granville Co. NC will show this.
As you said to me a few years ago - lets stick to proven facts.
If you still have the three books written by Clayton Cox - check the third
volume last chapter.
How is the Ky search going now for you.

For whatever it is worth, my records show James and Mary Yarbrough had a
son James who was born in 1753 and married a Mary Adams. I don't really
have proof, I got the information from someone who is a member of the
D.A.R. She said that the dates were taken from various sources such as
census etc.

Hi Dick,
Well, my research is just at that stage of a needle in a haystack. I need
so badly to visit Va. and the Carolinas but with the kids I just will never
have the time. I too feel so strongly that Mary wasn't a Yarbourgh but how
in this world do you get others to accept this idea? My line was so easy
to complete up to Matthew and I do have holes here and there. I know
everyone else is to the point I am stuck at James. I just wish as a whole
we could put all our energy into digging further back and working on the
James mystery.. As much as Clayton's books helped it also hindered the
research process. I received a called a few months back from a man in
Oklahoma about my line. He sat and argued with me about my own
grandfather. Excuse me sir this is two generation back from me I think I
know my own family. Well, Mr. Cox has it written that this was the way it
was. Well, sir with all due respect to Mr. Cox he was misinformed. So
actually I have just really been kind of going through the motions lately.
Been researching mostly on the net and seeing what I can come up with. It
is feeling like fall up here. Kind of nice but I am dreading the snow.
There is a small chance we may be moved back to Florida although it will be
the East coast and I prefer the Gulf side. Well, gotta get Katie on the
bus. Today is the first day of school here. Take care and keep in touch.
Kathi Jo
