Preston was my ggg-grandfather,my greatgrandmother Rhodina Caudill Tackett was the
daughter of his son Hiram "Cud" Caudill.Preston was indeed a Civil War veteran.
He enlisted with the newly formed 10th Ky Mounted( Formed and commanded by Col Ben
Caudill, later redesignated the 13th Ky Cav.) in October of 1862 at Whitesburg Ky along
with brothers Harvey and Isaac. Preston served as 1st Sergt. Co. E. Preston was also
elected as a constable in Floyd County in later years. What lead to his being killed, I as
yet have not been able to find.I do know a man named Lewis McCreary was indicted(I have
located the indictment in the state archive court records)but never convicted. I have
worked with The descendents of this gentleman and they know very little about it
either.Lewis McCreary married and reared a family in Johnson County dying at an old age
from an accident. Preston was probably killed in the summer of 1883, the Ashland
Independent newspaper on August the 9th 1883 carried an !
article that stated "Lewis McCreary charged with killing Deputy Caudill in Floyd
County has moved to the Cattletsburg Jail for fear of a lynch mob in Floyd County" no
further details are given and no follow up in later editions. Talton "Bad Talt"
Hall also makes mention in his autobiographical writing that while serving as Deputy
Marshall he was called upon by someone and informed of some men causing trouble on Beaver
one of which was "the man who killed Deputy Caudill". I have searched for a long
time for Prestons gravesite, followed a lot of leads but never located it, I doubt it will
ever be known for sure. A few years ago myself and other members of the Col. Ben Caudill
Camp of the SCV set a Confederate military gravestone on the cemetary overlooking
Preston's last homeplace at Honeycamp Branch on Jacks Creek in Floyd County in memory
of 1st Sergt. Preston Caudill. Any information on Preston is appreciated and I will gladly
pass along any I have, stay in touch and feel f!
