Hi Penny
Just FYI, the Catton Street in London (near Holborn tube) is not named after
the Catton family, as far as I can tell. I looked into it a few years ago
and the street was created sometime in the first half of the 20th century
(possibly after either house clearance or the Blitz). Earlier maps of the
area have a different streetplan altogether. From what I remember one theory
I read was that it was named after an old street in the area from medieval
times where Catton was thought to be a corruption of another word. Sorry to
disappoint you.
I would also not recommend making a special trip to see it - it's more of a
side-alley than a street and has no particularly glamorous or attractive
buildings (although I would of course recommend a visit to London if you've
never been!) When the new Crossrail scheme is built it will have a
ventilation shaft from the tunnel emerging onto Catton St, which illustrates
nicely the regard the city planners have for it...
Good luck with your relative hunt (my Cattons were from Norfolk, not
Suffolk, I'm afraid)
Charles

Are you in the UK?
There are several CATTON's and I'm not sure my husband is one in your
branch.
My husband's great great grandfather was SAMUEL CATTON
DOB: Bet. 17881789
POB: Rendcomb, Suffolk, England
My husband's great grandfather was ALFRED FREDERICK CATTON.
DOB: About 1836
POB: Plaistow, West Ham, Essex, England.
My husband's grandfather was ALFRED SAMUEL CATTON
DOB: 1874
POB: 1 Church Street, Plaistow, West Ham, Essex, England
IMMIGRATED TO US: 1908
ALFRED SAMUEL CATTON and his sister LOUISA CATTON were the only two to
immigrate to the US.
A brother Albert Edward immigrated to South Africa and I know nothing about
them.
Other siblings that stayed in the UK were:
MARY ANN H. CATTON
EMMA ELISA CATTON
REBECCA CATTON
GRACE CATTON
and I know nothing about them. I tried to communicate with EMMA's
descendants but they are not interested.
I do know that there is a CATTON STREET in London but I don't know if that
street was named after my husband's CATTON family.
Do any of these names sound familiar?
Penny
