Let's see if this gets you started on the right path:
Your John Catt/Johannes Catt/Katz Jr. married to Leah Rupert is the younger brother of my
direct ancestor, my great-great-great-great-grandfather George Catt who married Mary Smith
(daughter of David Smith). Your John was the second son, and my George was the first son,
of Johannes Katz/John Cats/Catts/Catt (1758-1808) and Catherine Mason (1761-1850).
Your John Catt was uncle to my great-great-great-grandfather John Catt (b. 04 Oct 1810 in
Columbiana County, Ohio; died 1 Dec 1893 in Mendota, Dane County, Wisconsin) who was
married on 03 Jan 1833 in Stark County, Ohio to Leah Hamman (b. 10 Oct 1810 in
Pennsylvania, d. 18 Sep 1887 in Menomenie, Dunn County, WI).
My Great-great-great-grandfather John Catt's parents were George Catt (b. 5 March 1781
in Fayette County, Pennsylvania; d. 29 Nov 1858 in Bourbon Township, Marshall County,
Indiana); who married 17 Apr 1810 in Columbiana County, Ohio to Mary Smith (b. 6 Feb 1790
in York County, Pennsylvania, d. 23 Sep 1864 in Bourbon Township, Marshall County,
Indiana).
According to information (not researched or verified by me), your ancestor Johannes/John
Katz/Catt Jr. (b. 22 March 1787 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, d. 14 December 1872 at
Fort Scott, Bourbon County, KANSAS), married 15 Aug 1809 in Columbiana County, Ohio to
Leah Louisa Rupert (b. 1787, Pennsylvania, d. 14 Dec 1872 in Bourbon County, Kansas. This
information is from W. Cary Anderson's "Catt Family in America", please be
careful to verify all documentation.
According to the records in W. Cary Anderson's book, this particular "John and
Leah Catt" had children:
George(b. 1810 in Ohio) who married Dianna Lewis 17 Oct 1833 in Henry County, IN;
John Catt (b. 1811 in what is now SW Pennsylvania, died 10 June 1898 in Fort Scott,
Bourbon County, Kansas) who married Elizabeth Lewis 2 November 1837 in Henry County,
Indiana;
Hamman/Hamon/Harrison Catt (b. 2 Feb 1832 in Hancock County, Indiana who married Margaret
Jane Hopkins 29 Aug 1855; d. 30 Dec 1915 in Scott Township, Bourbon County, Kansas) and
Catherine Catt...and there may have been others, but that's all that is copied out of
his book into my computer record.
PLEASE NOTE that the above information may be incomplete or may contain typographical
errors; please verify all information from other sources before quoting it as
"correct".
When I did my original research on my direct ancestors -- I came across your "John
Catt" married to "Leah Louisa Rupert" and was very confused because, of
course, in my direct line there is a also a "John Catt" married to "Leah
HAMMAN" -- so they appear over and over as "John and Leah Catt" -- but
after a lot of research it became apparent that my John was a nephew to your John -- and
your John was, of course, the uncle of my John. Your John's father, Johannes/John
Katz/Catt was the grandfather to my John Catt, and the father to your Johannes/John
Catt/Katz Jr.
I assure you, it was was very confusing! I did come across the marriage records for your
John Catt and Leah Louisa Rupert in the oldest of the Columbiana County marriage records,
and in the W. Cary Anderson book and many other places you can find details about this
line.
Your John/Johannes Catt/Katz Jr appears to be -- according to the W. Cary Anderson Book --
the second son of Johannes Katz married to Catherine Mason; their children include:
1 - My great-great-great-great-grandfather George Catt who married Mary Smith (daughter of
David Smith) -- George is my great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather and the elder
brother of your Johannes Catt Jr who married Leah Louisa Rupert
2 - Johannes Catt Jr -- your ancestor
3 and onward ... lots of other children, not my direct line
Good luck on finding the documentation you want!
I am a member of the D.A.R., and my understanding is that our common ancestor, John Catt
married to Catherine Mason, was a Private in James Sullivan's Company, 13th Regiment,
commanded by Col. Wm. Russell in 1777; also was listed in several other places; and in
August 1782 was captured by Mohawk Indians, and released July 1783 and returned to Ft.
Ticonderoga. I did not unearth this information myself, but have heard it from another
distant relative, and it is also in W. Cary Anderson's book, but it is footnoted
incorrectly and when I spoke to the librarian in Ottowa, Canada, she figured out what the
footnote should have been (a reversal of numbers), and they have the records in their
lists of -- from their viewpoint -- "List of Rebels and Traitors captured" -- or
perhaps it was "...Traitors and Rebels..." -- depends on your viewpoint, though,
doesn't it? My next ancestor I'd like to see recognized by the D.A.R. will be
that common ancestor, by the way, unless someone else!
does it first, which will be just fine as well.
