Message Board Post:
Hi, I'm a direct descendant of Edward Catt (b1825), through his son Harry,an elder
brother of John James (b1869).
A couple of years ago, another descendant of Harry Catt brought my attention to a notice
in The London Gazette of 8th November 1918, stating that Harry and John James, together
with their siblings Charles, Frances and Frank Charlton had changed their surname to
DEERING by deed poll.
My cousin was told about this many years ago by an elderly relative, but had no idea why
it happened, although it was assumed that there was something 'dodgy' about it.
Interestingly this name change never seems to have actually happened.
As William Deering's wedding of circa 1750 may have some bearing on this later name
change, I would be grateful if you could advise me of any details you have regarding this
wedding and the subsequent name change to Catt.
Thanks
