Message Board Post:
I hope this helps those ofyou who have confused John Catt (b. Oct 4, 1810 in Columbiana
County, Ohio - son George and Mary (Smith) Catt) who married Leah Hammon (born October 10,
1810) with his uncle John Catt (Johannes Catt Jr born March 27 1787, son of Johannes
Katz/John Catt and Catherine Mason/Caterina Maurer) who married Leah Louisa Rupert (born
about 1787 in Pennsylvania), here are some items to keep in mind.
My great-great-great-grandfather John Catt married Leah Hammon (that's how her name
appears on the marriage record) on January 3, 1833 in Stark County, Ohio. Their first
son, my great-great-grandfather, was:
Josiah Franklin "Frank" Catt born February 7, 1834 -- who was "Josiah
F." on the 1850 census, Centre Township, Hancock County, Indiana; was "Jessiah
Catt" on his marriage certificate to Anna Hoover March 4, 1857 in Kosciusko County,
Indiana; was "Franklin Catt" on the 1860 census, Bourbon Township, Marshall
County, Indiana; was "Frank Catt" to everyone he knew in adulthood after moving
to Dunn County and environs after the Civil War; was enlisted in the Civil War as Franklin
Catt; had a Civil War pension as Franklin Catt; died October 6, 1914 in Springdale,
Washington County, Arkansas and had the name "Frank Catt" on the death
certificate; was buried with the headstone "Franklin Catt".
This man - my great-great-grandfather - clearly stated in his Civil War pension
application the name of his wife - Anna Hoover - and all his children's full names and
birthdates, all of which are identical to those in the family Bible which belonged to his
wife and which is in my possession thanks to his great-granddaughter's generosity in
giving it to me. (Thank you, Dorothy Catt McNaughton)
On the 1850 census, this John and Leah Catt are shown in Centre Township, Hancock County,
Indiana with the following information. ANY ADDITIONS WOULD BE GRATEFULLY RECEIVED about
these people - or their descendants:
Dwelling 104 - Family 106

Line 22 - Leah " age 40 female born in Pennsylvania
Line 23 - Josiah F " age 17 farmer born in Ohio - attended school within the year.
THIS IS MY GREAT-GREAT-GRANDFATHER WHO LATER MARRIED ANNA HOOVER; THEY DIVORCED IN DUNN
COUNTY, WISCONSIN SEP 15 1892 AND HE MOVED TO SPRINGDALE ARKANSAS WHERE HE DIED OCT 6 1914
-- KNOWN THERE AS FRANK OR FRANKLIN CATT.
Line 24 - Clarissa " age 15 female born in Ohio - attended school within the year
SHE LATER MARRIED JOHN J. STAPLETON AND LIVED ALL HER LIFE IN LOGANSPORT, INDIANA, DYING
FEBRUARY 27, 1883 -- ANY INFORMATION ON THIS LINE WOULD BE APPRECIATED.
Line 25 - George H. " age 13 male - born in Indiana - attended school within the
year. THIS IS GEORGE H. CATT WHO CHANGED HIS NAME TO SAYNER APRIL 7, 1883.
Line 25 - Abram H. " age 11 male born in Indiana - attended school within the year;
(later on he becomes known as Abraham)

also known as ADA MARY CATT and later married Stewart Bailey and she died from childbirth
in her 20s in Menomenie, Dunn County, Wisconsin
Line 27 Francis M age 6 male born in Indiana - attended school within the year -- note
this is probably "Francis Marion" after the famous Revolutionary War hero known
as "The Swamp Fox" -- a very common name for children born in this era -- NO
INFORMATION ON THIS CHILD -- but he is NOT the person who married Anna Hoover and he is
NOT the person who died in Springdale, Arkansas -- so DO NOT BELIEVE OR UPLOAD that
erroneous information from the GEDCOM file available on FamilySearch!!! IF YOU HAVE
DOCUMENTED INFORMATION ON WHAT HAPPENED TO FRANCIS M CATT AFTER THIS, PLEASE LET ME KNOW
-- I HAVE ALWAYS ASSUMED HE DIED YOUNG AS HE APPEARS NOWHERE ELSE.
Line 29 - Louis S " age 2 male born in Indiana. I HAVE NO OTHER INFORMATION ON THIS
CHILD EITHER, AND THIS IS THE ONLY PLACE HE APPEARS.
Also on the 1850 census, John's parents appear thusly in Irwin Township, Howard
County, Indiana:
Dwelling 49, Family 49
Line 12 - George Catt age 69 male Farmer $1000 value of real estate born in PA

APPRECIATED
Line 20 - Levi Beckner age 34 male Farmer $700 value of real estate born in Virginia (WHO
IS THIS? ANY RELATION TO THE CATT FAMILY???)
Also on the 1850 census, the OTHER John and Leah Catt appear thusly in Jackson Township,
Hancock County, page 61 (handwritten) or 20 (or perhaps 200) stamped -- also handwritten
401:
Dwelling 542 Family 552
Last line on the page - Line 42 - John Catt age 63 male farmer $600 value of real estate
born in Pennsylvania
Next page, line 1 - Leah Catt age 62 female born in Pennsylvania -- this is Leah RUPERT
Catt
Line 2 - Harrison " age 17 male farmer born in Indiana
If you consult the maps you'll see that Howard and Hancock County are next to each
other. While I don't know exactly when John and Leah (Rupert) Catt moved to Indiana
(from Ohio) there is a record of a land purchase by John and Leah Catt signed with
"x" for both in the county records.
John and Leah (Hammon) Catt's first two children were born in Ohio in 1834 and Jan
1836 and their third was born in Indiana in December 1837, so it seems likely they moved
from Ohio during summer of 1836 or perhaps spring of 1837 -- but documentation such as
land sale records in Ohio and purchase records in Indiana or other documentation is needed
to pinpoint the date. (ANY INFO OUT THERE???)
DEATH OF GEORGE CATT 1858 IN BOURBON TOWNSHIP, MARSHALL COUNTY, INDIANA:
John Catt's father George Catt (married to Mary Smith) lived in Bourbon Township,
Marshall County, Indiana when he died prior to November 28, 1858 and I have posted
elsewhere the administration of his estate which took place in Marshall County. His widow
Mary continued to live there until her death September 23, 1864, and two of their
grandchildren, Mary J Drake and Ephraim Drake also lived with them at least part of the
time -- see 1860 census below.
QUESTION FOR RESEARCH: When did George and Mary Catt move to Marshall County, Indiana?
What was the reason they moved from Howard County, Indiana? Other relatives seem to have
moved to Bourbon Township, Marshall County or Etna Green Township, Kosciusko County
(adjacent and to the east) -- what was going on?
1860 CENSUS -- Bourbon Township, Marshall County, Indiana shows George's widow Mary
(Smith) Catt and others:
Dweling 822 Family 855:
Line 24 - Mary Catt age 70 female housekeeper $2500 value of real estate $60 value of
personal estate, born in Penn.
Line 25 - Mary J. Drake age 16 female " born in Indiana - attended school within the
year
Line 26 - Ephriam " age 14 male born in Indiana - attended school within the year
RESEARCH QUESTIONS: WHAT BECAME OF THESE GRANDCHILDREN???
In the dwelling almost next to Mary and her grandchildren living with her is her grandson
-- my great-great-grandfather -- and his wife:
Dwelling 820 - Family 853
Line 17 - Franklin Catt age 26 male farmer $200 vale of personal estate born in Ohio --
this is my great-great-grandfather who later becomes known as "FRANK CATT"
Line 18 - Anna " age 21 female Housekeeper born in Ohio
Line 19 - James L. " age 3 male born in Indiana -- HE LATER BECOMES KNOWN AS
"LEWIS CATT" ALTHOUGH HIS NAME IN HIS MOTHER'S FAMILY BIBLE IS "JAMES
LOUIS BUCHANAN CATT"
Line 20 - John E. " age 1 male born in Indiana -- HE LATER BECOMES KNOWN AS "ED
CATT" ALTHOUGH HIS NAME IN HIS MOTHER'S FAMILY BIBLE IS "JOHN EDWARD
CATT" -- AND HE OR SOMEONE ACTUALLY ERASED "JOHN" ALTHOUGH IT CAN CLEARLY
BE SEEN DUE TO THE INDENTATIONS ON THE THICK PAPER!
Between the Franklin Catt's dwelling and his grandmother Mary Catt's dwelling is
the following family -- Franklin "Frank" Catt's younger brother George H.
Catt (who later changed his name to Sayner):
Dwelling 644 Family 669
Line 21 - Geo. Catt age 20 male Farmer $75 real estate $150 personal property born in
Indiana
Line 22 - Elizabeth " age 21 female housekeeper born in Ohio
Francis M. " age 1 male born in Indiana
NOTE: They named their baby "Francis M" -- apparently after Frank and
George's younger brother who I assume died. Later on George and Elizabeth moved to
Menomenie, Dunn County, Wisconsin, and he served in a Wisconsin regimentin the Civil War.
Frank and Anna also moved to Menomenie, but not until after the Civil War was over.
Geroge and Elizabeth's son Francis was known as "Frank" so that made ttwo
"Frank Catt" men in the same area. In 1883 just before the younger Frank Catt
was married, his father and mother, he and all his siblings changed their surname to
"Sayner".
NOT TOO FAR AWAY, also in Bourbon Township, Marshall County, Indiana, lives George (now
deceased) and Mary Catt's son John Catt and his wife Leah (Hammon) Catt:
Page 92 - Line 11 John Catt age 49 male Cabinetmaker $1600 value of real estate, $170
value of personal estate, born in Ohio
Line 12 Leah Catt age 49 female houekeeper born in Pennsylvania -- THIS IS LEAH HAMMON --
NOT RUPERT!
Line 13 Abraham age 20 male cripple born in Indiana (NOTE: he apparently got well, as he
later married and had a large family...don't have any explanation for the term
"cripple" and would like to know more...)
Line 14 Mary " age 16 housekeeper -- NOTE: This is Ada Mary who later marries
Stewart J. Bailey and dies in her 20s of complications of childbirth in Menomenie, Dunn
County, Wisconsin
Line 15 - Leah A. " age 10 female born in Indiana - NOTE: This is Leah Amanda later
known as AMANDA who married her sister's widower, Stewart Bailey, raised her
sister's children and had more children.
BY 1870, Frank Catt appears in Town of Peru, Dunn County, Wisconsin:
Dwelling 2, Family 2:
Line 11 - Catt, Frank age 37 male white farmer $300 value of real estate $300 value of
personal estate born in Ohio
Line 12 - " , Anna age 32 female white keeping house born in Ohio
Line 13 - " , Louis age 13 male white born in Indiana attended school within the year
-- LATER KNOWN AS "LEWIS CATT"
Line 14 - " , Edward age 11 male white attended school within the year -- LATER KNOWN
AS "ED CATT"
Line 15 - " , Alwilda age 8 female white attended school within the year - LATER
KNOWN AS "WILDA"
WISCONSIN:
By the late 1860s or as late as 1870 or 1871, John and Leah moved to a farm next to Frank
and Anna Catt in Dunn County, Wisconsin. During old age, Leah went to live with her
daughter (Leah) Amanda Catt Bailey (Mrs. Stewart Bailey) in Menomenie, where she lived
until her death. She is buried in Evergreen Cemetery along with baby grandchildren who
died in early life and her two daughters and her son-in-law Stewart Bailey.
Numerous land transactions refer to Frank and Anna Catt beginning in 1871 -- but I have
yet to look at all the records in Dunn County or to verify exactly when they left Marshall
County, Indiana and went to Dunn County, Wisconsin -- although it appears that Frank's
younger brother George was doing well there and perhaps that is why Frank and Anna moved
-- although her brother Elias Hoover also moved to the Rock Falls, Dunn County, WI area
about the same time, so she had relatives nearby as well.
Other Catt cousins at least visited for a brief time to Wisconsin and then moved on.
It would be interesting to be able to piece together the movement of the Catts!
