Hi June
I am researching CATON too. They are quite a rare breed I find! None of mine
seem to have registered their births either, and I cannot find baptismal
certs for them. We may have a link as the name was very uncommon in 19th
Century Ireland, which is where my CATON came from also.
My Gt Gt Grandfather was a Timothy CATON. He was born about 1826 in Ireland.
One census says he was born in County Cork.
He married a Mary ??? who came from County Waterford.
Their children, including my Gt Grandmother Catherine were all born in the
south of England ( no birth certs and no baptismal certs but they too were
RC) the children were
Daniel born 1853 appx Heston Middx
Mary born 1854 appx Heston Middx
Bridget born appx 1856 Blandford, Dorset
Catherine ( my Gt Grandmother) born appx 1859 Blandford, Dorset
Ellen born ???? appx 1862
Timothy and Mary were agricultural workers who obviously travelled around
the country finding work.
Thery settled ultimately in the Epsom area of Surrey working on farms.
Your Richard would have been of the same generation ans my Timothy, both
being born in the 1820s also both in Ireland. It is highly likely they were
related because of the rareness of the name. It was often recorded as
Keating or Keaton but Timothy's daughter swore an affidavit ( attached to
his death cert) that the name was CATON, not Keating,
What baptism certs do you have?
Would you mind giving me the info?
We have tried tracing Daniel Caton. We have found his marriage cert and the
births of his 3 children, 2 of them sons but the trail then goes cold.
I will keep your email in my CATON box and hope that we can compare notes
from time to time
Pat Kelly

Hello Everyone
My name is June Clough, and my mother in law was a CATON, from the Wirral,
Cheshire, UK. Her father was a Francis Joseph Aloysius CATON, whose
father
RICHARD CATON was born in Thornton Hough, Wirral in 1863. His father
was
another RICHARD CATON and his mother ANN MAHER or RYAN.
RICHARD CATON was born in 1822 and died in 1867, he is buried at St
Winefrid's RC Church, Neston. Although I have baptisms for this family
from
1851, they do not appear on any census until after this Richard's
death,
nor
do they register any births or marriages. So I am unaware of the
birthplace
of the elder Richard Caton. His wife was born in 1830 somewhere in
Ireland,
so it is possible that Richard could be from there. Richards baptism
and
his marriage to Ann Maher or Ryan is really what I am looking for. The
Catons are Catholic, by the way. If anyone has any suggestions or links
to
this family I would be very grateful,
June Clough
