I am going to post what I have on my chart I made on the CATER family by
using the will information & Leonardo Andreas's info.
There were 2 'apparent' Thomas CATERs early on (in addition to a Francis
& George). One came into York Co., VA in 1651 & one came into VA in the
Ware River area in 1654. This could be father & son. There was a will
for a Thomas CATER in 1731 & there is no way for me to tell from the
information I have if he was one of the above or a descendant, if even
related. In this 1731 will is listed:
*1.William who m. Mary, d. 1749 (Is the g-g-whatever grandfather of the
one(s) who went to MD?)
2.Mary (m. a LASHLEY & died bef. 1731)
3.?dau. who m. a BULLIN & had dau. Elizabeth BULLIN (this may be someone
else's dau. who is already m. at time of will)
4.?another son? who had a son Paul CATER who was b. after 1711
5.Susanna who m. a BRADWELL*
the above Susanna's name might have been spelled wrong because there
are
several
BRANFORD grandchildren of Thomas listed: William, b. bef. 1710
(prob.1700-1710); Ezekiel, b. bef. 1710 (prob.1700-1710); Joseph, b.
bef. 1710 (1705-1710); Benjamin, b. after 1710 (prob.1710-1715); Ann
who m. HAMLIN & Mary who m. SHEPHARD & another granddaughter who's not
in the Branford family, Mary HAMLIN *Stephen Cater also named a John
Bradwell & Elizabeth as executor of his will in 1783.
William had 7 children:
*1.Thomas Cater, b. bef. 1723 (prob.1715-1720)
2.William Cater, b. after 1723 (prob.1725-1730) - moves to Barnwell,
Orageburg Dist. from NC, m. Amanda ---.
3.Benjamin Cater, b. aft. 1723 (prob. 1727-1732) - moved to Orangeburg
Dist, Barnwell Township, m. Nov. 26, 1758 to Ann VICKERY
4.Joseph Cater, b. aft. 1723 (1729-1734) ?is he the one with 6 children
in 1752 Kershaw Co., according to Andreas?
5.Elizabeth, m. a MARION (there is also a John Catoe listed in the 1750s
in SC as having land adjoing a MARION)
6.Mary, m. a BAKER
7.Ann, m. a CHILD
Thomas Cater who was b. bef. 1723, m. Racheal MILES, d. 1753 while still
fairly young. He listed no wife at his death.
*1.Thomas Miles Cater
2.Mary
3.Silas McPherson Cater
4.Willam Cater
5.Richard Cater
6.McPherson Cater
Thomas Miles Cater, son of above Thomas, b. 1740-1753, m. 1st to Sarah
POSTELL most likely, 2nd to Catherine ---. 1790 Beaufort Co. census
lists:2-2-6
1.John James Cater, born around 1800-1801
2.Richard Bohun Cater, b. aft. 1802
3.Andrew Postell Cater, b. aft. 1802
4.Edwin Cater, b. aft. 1802
5.Sarah Postell Cater
There's also a Stephen Cater who I would like to know how might be
connected to William Cater, who left the will in 1749. There appears to
be 2 Stephens; I don't know if one was the father & one was the son or
what. A Stephen Cater leaves his nephew, *Thomas Cater*, a plantation
in Newport, GA & neice, Rebecca Hobbs & her children all living in GA,
his other plantations in GA, will sg. 19 Mar. 1783 pr. 19 Jan. 1785, &
is apparently very wealthy (he also mentions a nephew living in
England). One Stephen m. Ann & one of the Stephens had son Phillip who
was baptised in St. Phillip Church in Charleston (in lower part of
Orangeburg) Nov.22, 1747 (Did Phillip die? Why isn't he in either
will??). This Thomas Cater that recieved the land from Stephen is most
likely NOT one of the above since I believe he is the one who left the
will in GA in 1800. The ones up above all had wills in SC. (Then
there's the William CatO in Fairfield Co., SC, d.1831, m. Susan Eccols &
had twin sons Stephen & Phillip in addition to other children - is he
possibly from the CatER line?)
Then in St. Georges Parish, SC will of Stephen Cater dated August 23,
1779, leaves estate to nephew, John Cater. (In Chatham Co., GA, Will
Book B, pg 85, will of John Cater of Savannah, dated May 23, 1782, wills
property he recieved from his uncle Stephen Cater late of Parish of St.
George in SC, to his wife, Susannah Cater.)
In GA in 1759, Stephen Cater petitions for tract of land for
culltivation having had none granted him and having 20 slaves, a tract
of land at Midway being mostly marsh and containing not more than 1000
acres & in 1760, Stephen Cater granted 415 acres in St. John's Parish.
In GA is the will of Thomas Cater in 1800 at St. Simon's Island - this
is probably the nephew of Stephen Cater.
It appears that Benjamin F. Cater:
Will of Benjamin F. Cater in St. Simon's Island, Glynn Co.,
1/23/1840. Wife,
Margaret K., 1/3 estate, daughter Anna Armstrong Cater, 2/3
estate, 90 slaves
value $31,680; other property totaling $35,062.00.
and: Glynn Co., GA census 1820 shows Benjamin Cato & then in 1830,
Benjamin F.
Catoe, pg 266: 1 m 30-40, 1 f 20-30, 1840 shows John Cator, pg
21:1 m 30-40,f
30-40, 1 f 15-20, 1 f u 5. 1850 in Early Co. has J.D. Cayton pg.
303, hotelkeeper from GA, Margaret, 45 from GA. (Note from
Gloria - Note family which we find first in 1820 in Warren Co.,
GA, moving to Dooley Co. by 1840.
is possibly a descendant of one of Stephen Cater's nephews, judging just
from the amount of property he owns in GA & where he lives. The Ann
Cater found there is possibly the wife of Stephen Cater:
(Abstracts of Colonial Wills of the State of GA 1733-1777) Page 3,
Estate of Francis ARVEN, probated Oct. 30, 1769, Ann Cater one of
the witnesses.
We also show, in GA, 1769, David Cater granted 200 acres in St. George
Parish; GA 1771, Edward Cater petitions for 100 acres on Boggy Gut; John
Cater, Soldier of the American Revolution; from SC, died 1782.
Does anyone know anything else about ANY of this family that might help
clarify or fill in any of the missing information? If anyone has any
additional information, please let me know! I'd love to have the whole
CATER family accounted for!
