Hi!
Because there have been numerous questions to me in the past about these
CATES in
SC possibly being CATER or CATO, I'm forwarding this to the list. These
CATES were in
Cloud's/Cloudy Creek area of Edgefield Co. Though this doesn't say they
weren't CATER or CATO earlier, it does show which families came from
them. (John CATES had a son Needham CATES & the other first names have
led many in the past to believe this might be a CATER family. Also, on
the census it is hard to tell what the exact spelling is.)

EDGEFIELD COUNTY SOUTH CAROLINA ABSTRACTS OF DEED BOOKS 1-12, 1786-1796,
Volume
One, Abstracted By Ge Lee Corley Hendrix, C. G., Southern Historical
Press,
Inc., 1985, page 168.
Deed Book 11: 1794-95, Pp. 79-81. 19 Apr 1794; Article of
Agreement:
MARTHA CATES, wife of THOMAS CATES, late deceased of Edgefield Co., SC
to
JOSEPH CATES, JOHN CATES, HULDA CATES, KEZEAH CATES & THOMAS CATES, for
consideration of moveable property of THOMAS CATES dec'd., & dowry
rights to
tract of land whereon said THOMAS CATES dec'd [word "lived" would appear
to fit
here, but may have been omitted in original or abstract???-VTC] &
further agree
that MARTHA CATES will pay all debts of dec'd. for penal sum of 100
pounds, S/
MARTHA (+) CATES, JOSEPH (+) CATES, JOHN(+)CATES, KESIAH(+)CATES, THOMAS
(+)
CATES (+), HULDA (+) CATES, Wit: ROBERT CATES, ELENOR SILLIVEN, JAMES
OGILVIE,
who swore by oath 3 May 1794 before RUSSELL WILSON, J. P. Rcd. 23 Jul
1794.
We have send for a copy of this original record from the SC Dept.of
Archives
and History. In the meantime the abstract seems to identify another
generaltion of CATES in Edgefield District, S. C. It also seems to
identify
more people by the same given names than we had identified in past
research.
One THOMAS CATES received land grants in 1784 and 1786 of 100 acres each
so
this may be the land mentioned above. We have a good collection of
CATES
records from early Edgefield County, District, however they are
extremely short
in both implied and identified relationships.
My husband line looks like this:
Thomas Cates (SENIOR/#1,???) (1735?-c.1793)
b. roughly 1730-40 or earlier d.bef. April 19, 1794
widow-Martha _?_ Cates b.by 1745 d. after 1794
Probable children/heirs from agreement-
Joseph
John (more than one from other records)
Hulda (more than one from other records)
Kezeah/Keziah (more than one from other records)
Thomas(Jr./#2/???) (probably at least one other Thomas/#3)
We have determined how some other Cates mentioned in records are related
to
Robert, but not how Robert is related to the older Thomas above.
Joseph Cates b. roughly 1760 d. 1812 Edgefield District, South
Carolina
widow-Elizabeth
Children: Rachel m.by c. 1812-20 Daniel Smith
Elizabeth, (Jr./#2) m.by c. 1812-20 Artimus Watson
John Cates b. c. 1787 Edgefield Dist., S. C.
d. February 20, 1826, Butler Co., Ala.
m. prob. 2nd Martha Daniel c. 1815 by Rev. DeLoach
Edgefield District, South Carolina.
She lived past 1880 applying for a War of 1812 pension
giving
specific references as to officers's names, etc. for
service
from Edgefield Dist., S.C. Pension was denied because
John
Cates's name was not on rolls, but contained other
valuable
family information.
Among the children of John Cates was Mahlon Cates who
seems to
have been born earlier than the 1815 marriage above.
Also my
husband's line comes through Needham Cates whose
Confederate
Service record from Alabama gives his birth as about
1818 in
Edgefield District, South Carolina.
Hope this helps someone. If I could collect 50 names or more of Cates
researchers, primarily with lines going back to early North Carolina &
Virginia, I would consider a paper newsletter. Lots of people do
genealogy
research, but will probably never get on the internet.
