I am not surprised of this at all. WE have many Catos on our Cherokee
rolls.
Most people know very little of the Cherokee. They have watched too many
Holliwood
movies. Most people do not even realize that the Cherokee was a light
complected and sometimes even blue eyed Native. Many of our ancestors had
to go into hiding because it was against the law
to live here and be Native. untill the year of 1909!! They would arest you
and take you the Indian
Territory.
I am not saying all Catos were Native, but alot of them were. Many from
Bollinger Co. Mo. are claiming
there heritige.

I'm forwarding this to the list, not because it has a CATO/CATER
reference, but because it references Drowning Creek & Indians (kind-of
far down in the article).
I'm still a little puzzled about Needham being called a "free person of
color" on that one census! Of course, Drowning Creek was a long creek,
but I'd rather not leave any stone unturned at this point!
