Folks,
I shall summarize the correspondance on William H. Cato for everyone.
It began with Cynthia's query as who was William H. Cato, buried 12
miles from Ashland City, born 1808, d. 1877, with wife Martha A.
Lawrence. Also buried in the cemetery was Thomas C. Cato, b 30 Mar
1845, d. 18 Dec 1867
I first suggested that he was the son of Roland Cato Jr., thinking he
was the William C. Cato that I have as Roland Jr.'s son and that he
married Martha Peebles in Davidson Co., Tn. 1/1/1839. In this
scenario Martha Lawrence was thought to be the name of Martha
Peebles Cato in a second marriage.
Miles Gardner responded after I had suggested he was son of Roland
Cato Jr.
"Cynthia wrote about the William H. Cato buried north of Nashville.
Surely that is likely to be the son of Vincent Cato, who was living
in
Williamson county (not far away) in 1837. Miles"
I wrote to Cynthia
"Cynthia,
I fail to realize that I was responding to you about William C. Cato
that I have as the son of Roland Cato Jr. until Miles responded that
William H. Cato may be Vincent Cato's son. I do not know where I got
the list of Roland Jr.'s children, neither do I know what was the
middle initial of the William that married the two Peebles women. I
plan to look up Roland Jr.'s will this week and copy all of it down.
That may help clarify things some. He is buried near where Roland
Cato lived whereas he was buried across the Cumberland River and some
miles from Williamson Co., depending in what part of Williamson Co.
William H. Cato was living. The Thomas C. Cato in the same cemetery
is surely the son of William C. Cato and Martha Peebles.
Miles, where did William H. Cato, son of Vincent, marry and what was
the name of his wife? Also I wonder where he was in the the 1840,
1850, 1860 census records. I have those for Tennessee in my hand and
William H. Cato is not in them. William C. Cato is in the census
records.
I will get back later. Henry"

Don't know if this will help?"
Miles responded with the following:
"The identity of this William H. is peculiar. I don't know where
or whom Vincent's son married. He was a minor 9/25/1822 and
evidently of age by9/12/1831 when he and brother Riley paid
off the claim of their mother's1/3 of Vincent's estate, so 1808
would be a possible birth year. He muststill have been in South
Carolina on 15 Nov. 1833 when he paid $50 to his mother's
widower, Moab Stevens (born 1765 or earlier). And the fact that
Amos Horton (his uncle?) of Franklin county, Tennessee gave
him power of attorney in 1837 in the division of his father, Wm.
Horton's, estate, makes it seem he was either to be in South
Carolina for a visit or was perhaps back and forth between
Tennessee and SC. It's odd he's not on those censuses;
perhaps he speculated in lands further west."
Presently it would appear that William C. Cato is in the 1850 census
and William H. Cato is in the 1860 census and they are one and the
same person. It would appear that the wife was named Martha
Lawrence but presently we do not know if that was a maiden name
or married name. At the moment we cannot be sure whether this is
the son of Vincent Cato or son of Roland Cato Jr.
I will get back with my research in the Davidson Co. and Cheatham
Co. records shortly.
